Car Repair? — Brooklynian

Car Repair?

I'm new to the area and that my car would not start this morning. Any suggestions for a good repair shop to have my car serviced? Suggestions on car repair shops to avoid? Many thanks.

  • there's quite a few old threads about the topic - just do a search for "mechanic" to get started. Quite a few of them are by type of car - lots of recs for Volvos and others . . .
    good luck!
  • I can't speak for good service stations because I don't know of any. However, I would suggest avoiding the Cobble Hill Super Station (it's a Shell station that also does auto repair). I had a lot of work done on a car I used to have there and was not happy in the end. They seemed to do most of the work ok but it took way longer than estimated, cost more than they estimated, and then later I found out they didn't even do everything that they should have. I had some major work done to struts and such and they didn't suggest I get an alignment after that. I nearly got into several major accidents on slippery roads within a couple days of getting my car back. Unfortunately, I think they are the closest towing station to Park Slope if you have AAA service. Pay the extra and take it somewhere else.
  • Frank and Dom at Procare. But, I think they changed the name to Superior. I havent' been there in a couple years since I'm still under warranty with my newish car. 768-0622. They're completely honest and above board in their diagnosis and fees. They have great skills but will tell you what they can't or wont do. And perhaps most importantly, they help you decide what you need to prioritize in terms of time and expense. I can't recommend them more.
  • I have had good experiences using Tony's Auto Repair for years.

    Once another shop broke my car during a NYS Inspection. I brought the car over to Tony and he kept on replacing things until he could get it to work. The kicker is that if he installed a part that did not fix the problem, he would then take it out and not charge me for it (no labor or parts). In the end, it turned out that the original shop broke the fuel injectors. Tony replaced it with a certified rebuilt. Well, it turns out that the certified rebuilt was not working so he then replaced it with new fuel injectors. When I questioned the price of the parts, he called his supplier and negotiated a lower price on my behalf.

    I was ready to give me car up for dead and Tony totally saved it.

    Tony has since semi-retired but I have equally good service at his shop. The sign has changed to something like 'High Tech Car Repair' but the address and phone are listed below:

    Phone: 718-797-9578 Address:: 424 3rd Ave: Brooklyn, NY 11215

    Good luck.
  • I would like to add a voice in urging you to never ever go to Cobble Hill Super Station. They have cost me thousands of dollars in repair fees for fixing what they broke in my car (in several separate incidents. I know, I know, fool me once...etc) and caused three breakdowns on the highway.

    I have called AAA many times to complain, and now insist on them sending a truck from another repair shop. The last time I did that, however, Cobble Hill Super Station was so pissed that I was going with someone else that they called AAA to cancel my service order. I ended up having to wait 4 hours for a jumpstart.

    In other words, they suck. A lot.

    I second this recommendation. Dom and Frank are stand up guys. They once talked me out of spending money on a tune up that I thought I needed and they said would be a waste of time and money.
