Problems at the Post Office on Fulton? Go to....

A lot of people on this forum have complained about the Post office down on Futon. There are millions of horror stories involving that "Hole" they call a Post Office. Losing my mail, Losing my Packages, opened packages. Write up a complaint you say? Doesn't do any good at all. I for one gave up their service 2 1/2 years ago and never looked back. But where can I go to get my mail and get my packages?

Go to F. B. Enterprises! It's on the corner of Washington Ave. and Prospect place. Hailejaa is the owner and is one of the best human beings I've ever met in this neighborhood. He'll set with a post box and your packages are safe and sound. Help him out.

  • Good point -- you will find many fellow fans here! I send everything going out from FB and always have good results. I heard about it on this board, I think from RBG.

Unfortunately, my recent problem involved something being sent to me, and it just happened to come on an afternoon when I wasn't around. Also, I think the PO folks may have spilled the stuff on it before they attempted to deliver it so having a different shipping address might not have helped.

Either way -- Hailejaa would definitely have been nicer about it!
  • Subject: Post office action

Actually, last week, my mail delivery was so bad (all of it but one piece of junk mail was not mine) that I called the post office to complain. I spoke to the manager and told her that this problem had gone on for a long time and that it was so prevalent in the neighborhood that it was openly discussed on this forum. Apparently, she had no idea. I suggested retraining of sorting or whatever. The next day, all of the mail was mine, including a wedding invitation that nearby friends had received the previous day.

If others are having this kind of problem, I encourage calling the post office and complaining to the manager rather than just airing grief here (while it may be therapeutic). I'm not saying that it's all fixed by any means but I think the volume of calls might be an indication to them that there's a more systemic problem than they're fully aware of.

By the way, if anyone is over at 582 Vanderbilt, yours is the mail we tend to get, so email me privately and tell me if you're getting ours.

    Thanks,
    Gphant
  • How did you get the number? On the USPS website, I could only find 1 800 ASK USPS.
  • The other issue with F&B are their hours - they are only open when I'm at work. It's very sad - I'd love to use their business but can't.
  • Eghchghgh.... I recently had a package delivered, EXPRESS...

It was supposed to get left with my building's mgmt... the delivery person didn't leave a notice, TWICE, and when I went to get it Saturday morning, for whatever reason, when they put the info in they got no results for my package.

Mind you, this is a part for my car that I need to install to drive it (shift cables, mine broke) and sell it... so it was urgent

Thankfully, I went today, and while the ladies there were still abrasive, they managed to find my package, which I'm happy about, because if I hadn't got it today they would have sent it back :(

But between the incompetence, abrasiveness and generally lackadaisical, 'what the hell do you want, im hanging out' attitude, that post office needs a major overhaul... it's something out of a Chappelle show skit...
  • Subject: Fulton and Adelphi Post Office number

If you click into "More Info" about the local post office under the information, you can find the local number. Here's the one for Fulton:
    (718) 783-2444

I suspect that the more that we tell them that it is prevalent and a well-known issue throughout the neighborhood, the more they can't ignore it. The manager who I spoke to was very responsive. I was suprised. I was expecting the usual deadened response. But she was very responsive.

    fed ex and ups, too?
  • Hailejaa is a doll...just don't try to mail packages on a solstice day (as I discovered last week)!
  • It is a sad day in the Heights folks. F. B. Enterprises is closing it's doors for good!

Hailejaa is not making enough money to keep the place running. To many people go there to buy only one stamp at a time. It's just not working out and he wants to pursue other interests. Wish him well.
  • OH NO. How sad for Hailejaa. I had 2 packages I was going to take there on Monday. Now my only other option is the crappy post office.
  • NOOOOOOOO!!!!
  • okay. I understand everyone's upset - his service sounds awesome.

however, I think he could save it if he adjusted his hours to allow for people who work 9-5 jobs to able to use his services.

He was OPEN on Saturdays 8 months ago AND he had was OPEN from
7:30am to 6pm weekdays. Plenty of time to get your packages and mail stuff out in the morning. He had to cut hours because no one was going on Saturdays and if they did it was only for a couple stamps.

Now the place is closed for good and we have to deal with the sh*t hole of a post office down on Fulton.
  • uh

the hours I was aware of were 9-5 M-F.

    useless to me

if he changed his hours, he didn't advertise them. so. again, not my problem.

in any case, sorry he isn't the best businessman in the universe. he has the nabe locked up, just can't seem to make the cash.

and. again. not my problem. just wish I could have benefited.

by the way - people don't just randomly carry packages around hoping that F&B is open. advertising is required for that type of business.
  • yes, in lots of ways haleijah didn't run his business the way that i would have.

but i'm still very, very sad to see it go.
  • I guess we can't all be prefect. The last note of F.B :-({|=
  • i was under the impression that Hailejaa's brother was going to keep the PO boxes and still accept package deliveries...
but i am going to miss being able to mail stuff there
    :(

Yea, if you have a PO box you'll still be able to get packages and mail delivered there. Not to bad, but I'll miss walking in and hearing great music being played and talking to Hailejaa about what's going on in the neighborhood.
  • Hi, this is a great forum. I agree that hailaja'sbusiness was not that great and I only went there once -- a lot of businesses in the 'hood don't cater to our time. Many of us do work away from the area and can barely hooft it to the subway on time. I tend to shop and do errands after 6:30PM or in the city or on Saturday AM. As for the post office -- well, as stated earlier, I started writing "return to sender" on a LOT of junk mail and mail for folks who had moved, passed away, etc. I ran into the postman and he said if I made a list he would discard the mail (this is after the person's forwarding address expired, but junk mail doesn't get forwarded). It took a few months but things are much better. OK, here's the next thing. Keep calling the post office but if we act out like they act out toward us things won't get any better. Call and write our local politicians and let them know too. This is Brooklyn, New York and not anywhere else. We actually live here and not our small towns or suburbs or "better" cities so unless we take positive action things will go on the way it is. This neighborhood is gentrifying but...there are still many locals who work locally and whose perspective is different than some of us. WE LIVE HERE not where we came from and if we don't act as if we live here and not some transient world things won't change. HAPPY FOURTH!
  • I guess the schedule (longer hours), service (more staff) and diversified offers (different shipping methods) is part of what has kept Maiboxes of Park Slope at 328 Flatbush in business for so long. Even though once their lease is over it might be difficult for them to renew, but I love the people there. I went to F & B twice loved the music and the wood work.
