Hipsters and Crocs
Now at 58 I thought I was too old to be a hipster.. even though I live in PS. I kept hearing how comfortable Crocs shoes are and I bought a pair... in pale pink no less.. well I have been wearing them alot in the past week and my feet have been really comfortable. O.k. I admit it.. I like them so much I bought a pair in red and a pair of Mary jane style in l lilac. My husband hates the look but all my younger friends (around 30ish ) jokingly have been calling me a hipster!!
So a question.. Who wears Crocs? What do you think of them even if you don't own a pair? Once you bought one pair did you like them so much that you bought another?

you're on the safe side of crocs *not* turning you into a hipster

my girlfriend's mom in smalltown Minnesota was the earliest adapter I know
you might enjoy this previous bit of rant . . .

I just passed a PS MOM on 8th Avenue - she was 30 something and had two little girls - one about 7, one about 5 - all were wearing identical lavender crocs. It made me laugh out loud as a passed them. Hipsters?I think not. Hipsters wear those stupid small straw hats, converse all stars and skinny jeans.

Ugliness aside, I still don't understand how they can as comfy as people say... how is it that your feet aren't a sweaty, sticky mess in those rubbery things?
-
The only people who can get away with crocs and those other hideous bulbous footwear (keanes, teva sandals) are the under-5 crowd. I think they look quite cute in miniature size.

Well it has to do with the actual material and whatever manufacturing process that gets applied to it and there are vent holes... Trust me your feet do not sweat!
I am a shoe nut and don't own any pair of shoes that retails for less than $145.. (not bragging) and many more expensive and in shoes I go for the magic of quality and comfort. I can't believe how a shoe made out of "plastic" and looking so ugly can feel that good on my feet and in their ugliness.. amuse me... hey.. the love of my life in the Canine world was a Pekingneese.... pretty "ugly" dog... so perhaps that is just me... appreciate the truly homely in shoes and animals!!
I do have very attractive shoes. -
Okay , I was wondering wtf are Crocs. I looked them up ,and OMG they are so fugly. I wouldn't look at them twice in a shoe store. Actually , I'd feel cheated and dirty having to have looked at them once.
Funky funky FUNKY! They look like clown shoes.

Straw hats? Are we boating down the Mississip' with Huck and Jim?
Call me a hipster at yr fucking peril dude, but I'll wear a classic like Converse until my feet wear off before I ever don some clown-shoe crocs. -
They are very comfortable but I only wear mine in the house or to walk the dogs around the block. I actually bought mine from a yoga website before I ever saw anyone in Park Slope wearing them. They're such a Park Slope cliche at this point, but not for the hipsters. I think they're very cute on little kids.

check out that website if you are considering putting your little kid in crocs -
Crocs are the most hideous things I have ever seen. It looks like Uggs summer cousin with holes.

hipsters would never wear crocs

Ok... I was distraught after reading these responses. I have retired my Crocs for the day and am wearing Dansko Sandals. I may not be a hispster but my footwear looks a little more "oersonal" than meeting the masses today wearing shoes that the PS masses are wearing.
Any criticism of Dansko sandals? -
i love dansko clogs but don't know about the sandals. people in my profession (artists) wear them a lot, as do surgeons, because you can stand for long periods of time in them. they're not cheap, so i'm always on the lookout for a pair on ebay.
-
plenty of people hate crocs; plenty of people hate danskos. i think the whole thing is ridiculous. who cares what someone else's shoes look like?
one of the things that i like about brooklyn is the relaxed atmosphere compared to that twitchy little island over the river. sniping at people's clothes reminds me of middle school. vomit. -
as a person who was tortured over her very unfashionable clothes in middle school, i can tell you that while i often secretly make fun of others' clothes, i also, no-long-secretly, hope people think mine are cool/pretty/fun

hey, me too. that's why i don't wear uggs, for instance -- i don't like how they look. but if someone else wants to wear them, who cares? actually, i should encourage people to wear them, so that i look that much cooler by comparison.
besides, the girls who made fun of my clothes in middle school were wearing, in retrospect, some pretty silly outfits themselves. i guess that gives me some perspective on the matter. people in glass houses, etc. -
Saw a woman in black crocs and a business suit today, on her way to work. I thought that was pretty novel.
-
I'm so cool, I could wear Crocs and STILL be cool.
and no that wasn't me in the suit this am
Anyway, my definition of cool, dating from grade school, is not giving a sh*t what other people think of my clothes. In a direct line from Catholic school to punk rock, I learned to see beyond the uniform . . .

... and she is more likely to get away from a bad situation on the street - if something were to happen - and is less likely to have back pain, or messed up feet, or what have you.
if people are going to be making fun of shoes (which is dumb), perhaps we might look at the women in the tall heels who can't even walk down the street - very popular this season. sometimes i notice the heels are basically at a 45 degree angle to the ground instead perpendicular. fashionable? -

I have bought Dansko shoes on E Bay.. both new at a good price and gently used.. The footbed of at least some of the Dansko Sandals is the same as their clogs... and that makes the shoes very comfortable!! -
Crocs are very comfortable. My mother hurt her heel in a car accident and I bought her crocs to wear in the garden and on errands. They allow her to be on her feet a lot longer than she would be in normal shoes. She has thanked me repeatedly.
I also have a pair that I wear when doing laundry and errands. If you find them comfortable, who cares what others think? They're kind of dumpy looking but I'm not wearing them to dinner or anything. -

All reasons I'm a big fan of flat shoes. Though in the last year, I started branching out into the wild world of heels. They do look pretty, but even reasonably sturdy, comfortable heels leave my calves tired at the end of the day.
I also think crocs are ugly, but I thought that about Birkenstocks, and eventually bought a pair just because they were easy to slip on when I needed to make a quick trip to the store. If you don't like flip-flops (and I don't - I hate having a thong between my toes) the choices for slip-on shoes are more limited.
Gotta say, I love the Aerosoles store on 7th. The shoes are comfortable without looking like they were designed with my grandmother in mind.
-
I've heard Crocs are great for nurses and know plenty who wear them - though they wouldn't dare to wear them outside the hospital in prissy North Dallas.
-
Didn't they start out as gardening clogs? I'd love to know who "customer zero" was that started them as a trend to wear as a street shoe.
Mario Batali loves Crocs, particularly orange ones. I read where he washes them in his dishwasher, and that really grosses me out. All the street nastiness mixing with his dishes, blech! -
I bought them as gardening clogs, but I didn't like the way all the dirt from the garden comes in through the little holes. The first person I saw wearing them outside was my yoga teacher. Then, a couple of weeks later, half the citizens of Park Slope were wearing them.
I love that you can just hose them off. But putting them in the dishwasher is disgusting. -
Chef Batali more than likely runs them through an Auto-Chlor, a industrial restaurant dishwasher that kills just about any bacteria you can think of, plus, he's a pro; I doubt there are any dishes in the mix.

crocs? hip? crocs?
popular does not mean hip. -
i wish i could wear heels... i never wanted to wear them till one winter when i busted up my foot. (i can thank my doc maartens and thick socks for keeping me from breaking a bone. all the bones stayed in place and it was the muscles and ligaments that skewed out of place...) anyhow, since then, i've wanted to wear heels daily. usually, these days, i'm in chuck taylors.
