giant broken tree - Park and Carlton

Anyone know what happened to the giant tree that is partially in several huge pieces this morning on the corner of Park and Carlton across from the Q stop? Looks like lightening struck it right through the middle and split half the top off. Kind of amazing.

  • Wow, someone post a pic!
The lightning was intense last night.
  • When I was walking home last night around 7 (I think) the tree was already down. There were cops blocking the area off with tape and a police van.
  • When I walked by after work today, there were a lot of cut branches on the sidewalk, but still significant branches sort of drooping off the tree. They look like they'll have to be cut before they fall off on someone's car (or head). Poor tree!
  • We've had a lot of broken branches and fallen trees. I was talking with a friend who's been in the neighborhood for a few decades, and apparently a lot of similar trees were planted about 30 years ago in Prospect Heights. They are all maturing at the same time, and they are prone to fallen branches. Before them, the neighborhood had few street trees.

If you would like a tree in front of your home, you can call the city. Would anyone be interested in the number? I can try to get it.
