Sunset Park - what is it like to live there?
My friend is looking for a place around sunset park.
He is going to see one place around 40th/7th avenue this afternoon.
It is 1 bedroom with garden for $900.00, no fee.
What is the neighborhood like?
Is it easy to get around?
How about the commute if he needs to travel to downtown Manhattan?
Any information will be helpful.
He was and still is looking for a place around PH but they are just so expensive and he hasn't had a luck of finding the ones yet.

I lived in Sunset Park for a year in 2002. I liked it. It is a nice quiet neighborhood with not a whole lot going on. Most of the restaurants and bars catered to the working class Hispanics so there wasn't a whole lot there for a honky like myself. But the people were really nice, and there were a few yuppie-ish bars that I enjoyed.
The commute to Manhattan is pretty long depending on if you live near an express train or not. I lived on a local strop (at the time it was the N/R) and it took me at least 45-60 mins to get to manhattan. The commute is why I ended up moving further north closer to manhattan.
But if you live on the Q line your commute is noticibly shorter. The rents are very reasonable in Sunset Park. Also, the park that gave it the name has beautiful views of New York harbor.
see photos here. and here. -
brooklyns china town starts on 50 to 60 st on 8ave and 7, 9 ave(parts of them).

Thanks for your info.
We went to see it yesterday. We took express and walked quite a lot to get to the apartment.
It was big space but we decided not to take it because of the commute.
I wish to find something closer to PH, preferably along Q line.
But the park was really nice. I loved that huge outdoor pool.
I am going back there to swim before they close.
Thanks for the site. The pictures are very pretty. -

there's a few places (like Ba Xuyen, Vietnamese sandwich shop) on Eighth Ave in the 40s too
we were just over there talking about what life would be like nestled between good Mex/Ecudadorian and Viet/Chinese food . . . and with a great big public pool to swim it all off . . . -
god i hate that pool. got mugged and beaten there way too many times during my childhood. damn racist pigs there.

I know a guy (who is probably a little older than you) who grew up there - vicious gang thing in the 70s. But I thought that was over.
Seemed peaceful this decade... -

The commute by water taxi is about 15 minutes from Sunset park. It's $6 a ride. Don't know how much it would be if you were commuting regularly though.
