  • Welcome, Bluebella!

This board was hugely helpful for me when I was looking for an apartment in this neighborhood a few months ago. Armchair has info on his apartments on the classifieds board, which is a good place to look for apartment postings in general (although not yet a substitute for, say, Craigslist). I ended up finding a place when another person here sent me a message with info on an opening in her building, so it's a good first step for you to have posted here.

Also, try doing some archive searches for old discussions about landlords, brokers, real estate agencies, etc. One of the things I did when I was looking was search here for posts about brokers; I then pasted everything I found into a Word document and sorted it out by broker so that I ended up with a list of who got positive reviews, who got negative ones, and who got mixed ones (don't think I still have that or else I'd offer to send it to you). Took a lot of time but it was worth it to know who to avoid.

One other thing I did whenever I looked at a place, was follow up with a search here for the street and cross streets to see if there had been any discussions here about what the block was like -- were the neighbors nice, is there a crime problem, etc. Of course, not every block in the area has gotten a mention but it did give me some sense of what parts of the area should be avoided, what parts are improving, etc. And a few times when I couldn't find any info I tried posting here asking if people knew anything about specific landlords, brokers, or blocks -- got some good info from people who lived nearby or had dealt with those people.

Good luck with your hunt! It can be pretty frustrating but I think doing a lot of work is worth it in order to know as much as much as possible about what you're getting into.

  • Glad to help!

What kind of place are you looking for -- studio, one bedroom, two bedroom? Do you have pets? I'll keep my eyes peeled and I'm sure other folks will too, but it might help if we have some sense of what you need.

  • Subject: hi everyone..

I feel so welcome on this board..its great!! anyway, Im looking for a one bedroom..I do have a cat, but that doesnt seem to be a problem in this neighborhood or pk slope etc. I need to move sept. 1 or 15th. My situation is that I just broke up w/ my boyfriend of 4yrs and we are still in the apt together. I need to get out as soon as I can, but I really have until the end of sept. Please sympathize with me and help a sista out!! lol.. =)

    thx again for the replies..
