Thanks, I"ll have to check out United Meat. I've walked by it a few times ( since I'm in WT but never thought to look in.

    Jack
  • PS Food Coop, of course. You might want to check the Farmer's Market on Saturday in Grand Army Plaza.
  • Not sure, but you can try Fairway
  • You might also want to check the butcher on Court Street by Baltic (I forget the name), Dean and Deluca and Citerello might sell it as well but too be honest their meat departments really suck. Join the Coop my friend. Become one with the cul...I mean enjoy grass fed beef and pork.

Does anyone know where I can get some beef fed beef? That would be like DOUBLE BEEF!

  • I have to recommend Dines Farms. They currently set up at the market in Union Square on Monday, the Coble Hill CSA on Tuesday and Fort Greene Farmer's Market on Saturdays. I think they are also go to Greenpoint and another market in the city sometime during the week. We used to belong to the CH CSA and now that we don't made sure we knew where else we could find them. That said, anyone actually can go to the CSA pick-up and buy from them. Their meats and poultry are worth seeking them out. You can order from them ahead of time too (via website) and pick-up at any of the locations. Their hotdogs were written up in the Times. And they are really really nice people!
  • That's really funny
  • I'm pretty sure that Fresh Direct does NOT have pasture fed meat. However you can find pasture fed beef at Back to the Land on 7th ave
and at Whole Foods in Union Square

for the record, organic and antibiotic-free (which FD sells)
is not necessarily pasture raised, grass fed, or grass finished.

Grass fed beef has omega3s (the fatty acid in fish that is s'posd to be good for you), and has a different taste and quality of fat. There's health reasons as well as ethical reasons to look for grass/pasture meat.

Marion Nestle (EDIT: or is is Marion Burros?) in the NYT Food section wrote not too long ago about cows and what they eat, and the fights, and the labeling etc.

  • Our ultra-modern processing facility was designed with the help of Dr. Temple Grandin, one of the nation’s foremost experts on animal welfare. Our facilities reduce animal stress, providing fresh water, calm lighting and a climate-controlled environment. The nutritious feeding program is formulated for optimum health by Joe Bill Meng, our VP of Science and Technology. The cattle are raised slowly and naturally, the old fashioned way— initially pasture grazed and then corn fed.

If you're really dedicated to this, the Co-op or Greenmarkets are your best bet. The grass-fed organic beef at the coop comes from Maine, last time I asked.

    AND
if you're upstate or want to do mail order, there's Sir Williams

I was by their farmstand in Craryville NY. The cows are standing right there....
The beef has a hilarious somewhat creepy silhouette of a cow with a chef's hat at a kettle grill. It looks like a Bill Traylor piece...

That is NOT pasture fed. There is a difference between "organic" - which usually means the meat is antibiotic and hormone free - and "pasture or grass fed" which means that the animal is fed grass rather than grain (creating a less fatty meat that is higher in Omega 3s)

I would suggest sending them an e-mail to make sure of where they currently set up just in case. I'm not positive they update that part of their website all too often. It really is worth making a trip to find them.

  • d'artagnan had a recall a few years ago on their bacteria infested fois gras. i wouldn't trust them.

why don't you just save yourself some worries & go vegeterian? probably sounds extreme, but at least you don't have to worry as much about all the nastiness of meat. once you quit you see how gross it really is, like smoking. leonardo da vinci was a vegeterian, he called meat eaters human graveyards.
