Evaluation of realtors
Is anyone aware of sites that evaluate realtors working in Prospect Heights? We are retired psychotherapist and retired college teacher interested in a two-bedroom condo or coop in an elevator building or on the ground floor. We don't want a trendy building with lots of amenities but a pleasant one with spacious rooms pretty near Eastern Parkway. We need an agent who will be tuned in to our needs and help with preliminary investigations.

Are you buying? I hear excellent things about Marjorie Thompson.

Not from me -- my brief experience with her was responding to a rental ad where misrepresented the address, and she wouldn't show it to me (across the street from her office) until I gave her SSN and bank account #s, which is not typical (and a little insulting).
You can read various pro/con opinions of that realty office here. -
I personally used awoman named Jacqui Hawkins who was fabulous. -
brooklynleather,
Thanks for your suggestion. Do you know which realtor Marjorie Thompson works for? You could reply directly to [email protected]. -
my personal opinion they all suck!

Annette at James Enterprise is the nicest lady in the world. I want her to be my grandma! She lives in the neighborhood also and really cares about it. She's the best.

I had Marjorie Thompson look at my apt when i was thinking of selling it. She came over with another realtor and gave me a very low estimate for it, having done no research on the building (I ended up selling it FSBO for about 50k higher than she suggested). She also offered very little in the way of how they'd market it, etc. MT runs Washington Realty, if you're wondering how to find her. She does have some very off-the-beaten-track apartments, different from the rest of what's on the market. I saw an amazing (and cheap) apartment on Eastern Parkway and Nostrand through Washington. It was huge and very tempting!
I know you're looking to buy and not to sell; honestly, I'd look online and do most of the footwork yourself. Most of the listings in NYC can be found on the NY TImes site. -
Disorganized. Rude. Shady. That is her at her best. Currently I am renting an apartment that she showed me. She was rude throughout the entire process of getting the apartment. However, being desperate to find a place I put up with it. Finally after calling her many times, I found out that I could come sign the lease. I came to sign the lease and find that the owner was not there to sign it or go over the details of the lease with me. Desperate to get a place, I signed it anyway, with her promise that he would sign it tomorrow. That was on August 2nd. To this day I still do not have a copy of the lease (signed or unsigned) or a mailbox key (also many of the renovations are shoddy). She RARELY picks up the phone at her office and when she does she yells for me to deal with the owner (who never picks up his phone either) and then hangs up on me. She has the lease and has done nothing to get the owner to sign the lease.
NEVER WORK WITH THIS WOMAN. SHE WILL SCREW YOU OVER. AVOID HER LIKE THE PLAGUE. IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED I WOULD LIKE TO BOYCOTT HER AND TAKE FURTHER ACTION. -
as much as I DISLIKE marjorie, she found me my apartment that I rented below market and then bought WAY below market, so I kinda like the lady despite myself.

There have been quite a few negative experiences with Marjorie Thompson; I haven't worked with her myself, so I don't have anything to add there, but it's worth checking out. I'd suggest doing an archive search for "broker" and "brokers" -- there have been several threads on those topics on various boards -- and you might also want to search the archives for specific broker names you learn about. It will take a while, but I found the homework worth it when I went through my last apartment hunt.

try the people at warren lewis; of all the realtors i've met around here, i've found them to be the most honest and reliable. and not creepy

If you dislike getting hung up on multiple times, complete with lame excuse (you're in a meeting at 7pm on a Friday night, after I've already been speaking with you for five minutes? BS), maybe Marjorie Thompson is the wrong person for you.

I worked with Marjorie, too. She showed me a great apartment that had LOTS of noise issues. When I complained to her about the noise, she refused to accept my phone calls. Although I loved the apartment, I didn't have the brokers fee and told her I couldn't take the apt. because of that. I didn't press the issue. BUT, she pressured me into taking the apt. and told me to pay the fee when I got it. So, I signed the lease and moved in. A week later, she sent one of her associates to my new apt. He told me Marjorie was going to sue me unless I paid the fee right away. Of course I paid, but the experience left a sour taste in my mouth.

The BEST realtor we worked w/and bought from is Audrey Edwards. She owns her own brokerage (Plaza Properties)and it is located on Vanderbilt, right across from The Usual. SHE ROCKS!!!! PLUS, she has lived in the neighborhood for a LONG time and knows just about everyone, residents, supers and doormen. She gets the apartments that people refuse to hawk to Corcoran and the rest of em! Why give your $$$ to the PSlope brokers, go w/the neighborhood expert!
Audrey Edwards, google her! She's cool people and you'll get the real deal. =D>
