mucho noise/partying on St. John's b/t Wash Underhill

Pouring rain will not affect the noise on Labor Day weekend. It's a noisy neighborhood, face it. I've lived on St. Johns between Washington and Classon for 10 years, and it's always been loud. I've tried calling the precinct, and 311, and talking to the people responsible for the noise, and it doesn't make any difference except perhaps to temporarily make me feel better. At some point, you just accept it and learn to live with it, or move.
I once had a neighbor who would shoot frozen blueberries out of a slingshot at noisy people outside. It did make them go inside temporarily. -
this kind of stuff makes me insane. how come my insane neighbor can get something that's nothing noticed, but calling 311 and 911 does nothing for your noise. esp. since bloomberg is on this crusade about noise.
and i know there are a lot of undertones going on here, why this is happening, who controls what in regard to noise, neighborhood tradition, stepping on people's toes, etc... but it's wrong. -

for some reason i find this hilarious. -
alafairnadia wrote: I'm sure I'll get slammed for saying this, but if you see something dodgy, feel free to call 911. I'd try both 311 and the 77th first, though, and if someone from the 77th gives you shit again, I'd report them. quality of life issues are important.
I have no problems with this. I agree, even if they're not smoking weed, call 'em on it any way. partying until the wee hours is a scourge that must be stopped!
at the least people need to be responsive to you. everyone has parties sometime, but when the neighbors complain, its time to turn it down. we all have to live together. -
Subject: REPLY TO NOISE ON ST JOHNS
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO THE BLOCK ASSOCIATION MEETING? ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT NOISE THAT HAPPENS TWICE OUT OF THE WHOLE ENTIRE YEAR SHOULD PEOPLE WHO TAKE CARE OF THIS BLOCK SUCH AS MYSELF (LIKE DID U KNOW WE PLANTED THOSE TREES ON THE ENTIRE BLOCK) FOR OVER 30 YEARS BOW DOWN OR LIVE THE WAY YOU WANT US TO LIVE BECAUSE YOU PURCHASED A CO-OP IN A BUILDING THAT JUST TURNED HALF CO-OP 2 1/2 YEARS AGO. HOW FAIR OF A PERSON ARE YOU. I CAN BET YOU ARE THE SAME PERSON THAT COMES HOME AND DON'T HAVE THE TIME OF DAY TO TALK TO YOUR NEIGHBORS. I DON'T WANT TO SOUND IGNORANT BUT IF YOU CAN'T TAKE A FEW EVENTS THAT HAPPEN ON THIS BLOCK THAT ARE PEACEFUL THEN YOU SHOULD SELL YOUR CO-OP AND RAISE YOUR UNBORN CHILD ELSEWHERE BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW HOW LUCKY YOU ARE AND PUT THIS ON YOUR CALENDAR THE MEETING IS THE LAST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH AT THE CHURCH ON STERLING N UNDERHILL AT 7P.M. SHARP HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE [do not post other people's addresses, please, that comes off as harrassment --Mod] -

In response to howdareu:
I'm sorry you had such a negative reaction to my post. But you clearly misunderstand where I'm coming from and who I am. In fact, you don't know me at all. If you had read my second posting, you'd see that my only complaint is the loud music. Otherwise, I really like it here. And I always say hello to my neighbors when I get home from work. I am offended that you would make such an assumption.
I've had to move several times in Brooklyn b/c of high rents and bad landlords - I've never found a neighborhood that I could feasibly live in for 30 years. You are lucky that you have been able to stay in one neighborhood for so long and have a community that you can count on. We'd like to be part of that community. I've had to adapt to new situations and new neighbors every time I've moved.
One of the reasons we chose to live on this block is b/c of the lovely trees you planted. So obviously I appreciate that you were one of the people who contributed to their growth. But I still feel that the loud music is a separate issue - the noise hasn't been excrutiating on only two occasions. It happens quite frequently, and we can't stay in our apartment when it does. And I'm not talking about the block party or Labor Day weekend. I don't feel that it's wrong to try to express my feelings or try to find a solution when I'm unhappy with a situation, no matter how new I may be. I've had people complain to me when my music was turned too loud, and I didn't take offense or turn it into an "us vs. them" issue. We're all trying to live in peace on this block. I'm not asking anyone to change. I like the barbecues. I like the kids playing on the block. I respect the people who live here. I just don't like feeling that I can't stay in my apartment b/c the floorboards are undulating. I hope you can look honestly at my point of view. I doubt you'd appreciate it if I started blasting Sonic Youth or L7 under your windows at 12 midnight.
And if it helps any, I happen to know people who've lived here as long as you have or longer who are also upset with the music levels. -
howdareu, please read the rules before posting. You are scarcely the first person to show up here and try to tell people that newcomers' opinions don't count or that people don't know how to be friendly, and I'm sure you won't be the last, but the bottom line is that that kind of talk gets you nowhere.
Also, posting in all caps is perceived as yelling--which may not be what you intended--but people here will probably interpret it that way and not take your posts as seriously as they otherwise would. -

this is my favorite part of this post. see, the original poster was complaining that people were interrupting her family's life by blaring music loudly after hours. so this poster comes along and ... well ...
amusing, no? -

I'd say that more than "comes off" as harassment, myself...
Anyway. Howdareu, I think if you read this whole discussion a little more closely, you'll see that "lying to the police" is something a couple of people suggested, but NOT something the original poster ever did herself. And overreacting, posting someone's home address, and bragging about all the higher-ups you know at the police department really isn't going to do anything to make anyone here feel very sympathetic to you. Geez, did people treat YOU this way when you first moved to the neighborhood, however fucking long ago it was? -
Howdareu isn't a bad person, but he certainly thinks that the added noise and people blasting music in their SUVs all night is part of the neighborhood culture, the cultural landscape, so-to-speak---I strongly disagree. What he doesn't realize is that blasting music out of fancy cars at 11pm on a weeknight and having latenight parties on the sidewalk helps to foster negative stereotypes that continuously plague african-americans. Blasting music all night does nothing to foster the allegiances or sense of community that HowdareU is talking about. Honestly, I feel sorry for everyone who lives in those apartment buildings and have apartments facing the front. Everytime I come home and see that damn black SUV, usually doubleparked, blasting music, I think, "I'm so glad I bought an apartment in the back of the building." Howdareu fancies himself the mayor of the block and to be fair, he's done a great deal for the children and residents of St. Johns place---he's a true organizer in every sense of the word...Now, I just wish he'd organize the noise-monglers and get them to turn that shit down.

caps off smile if the point is noise then understand that happens I am not saying it is right but that is what has been going on for over 30 years and the people who lived here just as long used to participate as well because they are old now and they don't do it anymore because yes they did and I am telling you from experience. Loud music we can honestly say is on Saturday not a disrespecting day when you are going to work this block has over 1000 residents you better believe there is going to be noise especially the summer the winter it doesn't go on and you know that and you have not came to a meeting so how can you say you want to be a part of the neighborhood and that fake smile you give after work doesn't help either I am personally asking you and any of the other people on this post to come to the meeting even if they don't live on the block so you can see who I am and I don't sell drugs or use them so sorry for those on this post that I dissapointed -

We can go back and forth on this issue this goes to the those with there nasty comments which i laugh at because i know u are cowards and internet bullies ha you are happy to be here and like a few said before you either take it as it is and you know your other choice you people crack me up! I know my history i hope you know yours -
Caps lock - check! Thank you.
Uh, now can we get some punctuation? Sorry, but it's really hard to decipher what you're saying without some kind of break in the action...howdareu wrote: ...Loud music we can honestly say is on Saturday not a disrespecting day when you are going to work...
I work on Saturday and Sunday, a lot of people do... -

Um... how do you know her smile is "fake"? And how's anyone supposed to feel like they're going to really be the least bit welcome or taken seriously at any meeting after you've reacted the way you have here -- posting someone's home address and saying how you're going to call your buddies at the precinct and all this stuff? -
howdareu,
My smile is not fake, and I really resent that accusation. How could you possibly know who I am - and if you think you do, why don't you address me directly? Do you know anything about me or about the kind of life I've lived or about the contributions I've made? Obviously not. Do you know that I've helped my neighbors in different ways since living here? Do you know that I contributed money to the block party? Why would you even suggest that my smile is fake - unless yours is? Do you think the way you've responded to my initial posts makes me want to come to the Block Association meeting? And I never, ever accused anyone on this block of being a dealer. I never called the cops and made such a suggestion! You are accusing me of things that make me very uncomfortable - all because I complained about some music. I think you are the one who is stereotyping. If you really want me to attend the meetings, then you'd reach out rather than take cheap shots at my character. Why are you attacking me and not other people on the board who also live on the street or nearby? If you wanted to make me feel badly, you've succeeded. Congratulations. -

I'm confused ... is someone going to give me a history test the next time I'm on St. Johns? -
Our next door neighbor was partying last Saturday night until 5 am with 5' speakers - and last night, someone in my building had a party that went until about 2:30 am, also with loud music
Loud music we can honestly say is on Saturday not a disrespecting day when you are going to work
First of all 5am is not Saturday its Sunday. What about people who want to get up for church on Sunday? Should they be kept up all night long? -
homeowner wrote:
Yup. Hell, why does someone have to even need to be somewhere the next day for it to be reasonable to want to be able to go to sleep before 5am ANY night of the week? I was kept up by loud music on my block this past Saturday night until around 4 a.m. I didn't have to be at work or church or anywhere else the next day, but it was extremely late and I was exhausted and really, really just wanted to be able to get to sleep. I can see why music that late would bother anyone, regardless of what they do or don't have to do the next day.Our next door neighbor was partying last Saturday night until 5 am with 5' speakers - and last night, someone in my building had a party that went until about 2:30 am, also with loud music

BTW, found a few things online about how to deal with noise in one's neighborhood. This has four articles on how to deal with noise:
http://www.tenant.net/Rights/Noise/index.html
Note: edited to correct the URL -- somehow I got an extra L in at the end. Sorry!
And here's the city noise code:

Its funny how most of you stick together on these issues. Sure nobody likes noise all the time, but you I'm sure the majority of you have had a loud party at some point...
As much as you are trying to to help, d-miriam, you are making it far worse. She is speaking of her neighbor, howdareu, and the way this should have been handled is for them to speak to each other, with out the bull sh*t that you guys have written. Like shooting people with blueberries etc... Its easy to say that stuff in here, but do it on the street and see the reaction. Good luck!
One question for, d-miriam. How is it that you have been living there for 2 1/2 years and never spoken to howdareu? -
can't we all just get along?
