In this town?
200-250K = you can take a taxi anytime you want, you eat out whenever you want, you have garage space for your BMW, you can keep a mistress in a Williamsburg apartment
150-200K = no mistress but you can help out your deadbeat brother with his rent
100-150K = you're doing pretty well. unless you have kids.
75-100K = you're struggling but you have a good cable package
50-75K = you live in the fringe neighborhoods unless you moved here 10 years ago
<50K = poor
so sketchily true for new york city and i am definitely poor by these standards. -

Your legs can stand on your head, Carl? Cool.
but my legs go numb standing on my head -
I'm a picture framer, the pay is less than you'd think, but I get to play with razor blades and broken glass for a living!

I tell fun companies when their ads suck & how to make better ones, or when their ads rock, and why.
I also tell brands when their brands suck, or when the're not so sucky and how to increase their market share (ie, make other brands suck more).
Pay is good enough (I don't require a mansion, just bought in South Slope) and I can afford to eat out all the time (alas, no mistress, no taxis).
The job is "creative" and gives me time to be on this (and other) boards and I can sneak out to go to the gym at lunch.
Plus, I really like the people I work with, and we have a bar in the office and European holidays/benefits.
I'd rather be a professional runner/triathlete but I like to eat too much to stay in good enough shape :-) Plus, at this point, I'm gettin to old :-( -
Ok. It just seems like people make a lot of money and i want to know how and where i can get a high paying job. I was a mid level marketing executive at a very prestigious beauty company pulling a little under 100K between base and bonus. Mine was a typical salary for my level. You had to be at least a Senior Director to get 100K.
I generally liked my company and the work I did, however I kept on hearing how much other industries paid, and felt I was grossly underpaid, so about a year ago I left.
Well, today after an extensive 6 month search, I find myself with a fancy tittle and 30% salary cut.
Combined, hubby and I, both with executive positions, pull in income in the 3rd category from the top, but we got KIDS.
Honestly, after housing and school tuition, just about all we can afford is food.
Are we total losers? -
Public Relations for consumer products - mostly beauty and booze.
