I saw this and was wondering the same thing...
I actually like the fact that it is 2 lanes instead of three lanes when I cross the the library. Cutting the lanes down make it less like a highway/ strip.

People are always speeding so much on the stretch between the museum and library and it can be scary to cross.

But I do like the strip; I like it any time asphalt pavement is taken away rather than added.

I recall there being a whole new paradigm of pedestrian friendliness coming to Grand Army Plaza. Perhaps this is the beginning of that. I think there are some old posts about it with diagrams and such, or at least descriptions.

Anything is better than the current state. It looks run down now and so unsafe to walk around on busy Sat mornings.

agreed.
They could add even more green space and pedestrian area than what is shown on the proposal.

BTW: The library entrance now has water fountains! They were testing them this week!! Pretty cool.
