double parking monday thursday

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
hey neighbors--

i'm a new prospect heights resident and have had amazing experiences so far here. until this morning when i had a really unpleasant encounter with a wrongfully angry and uptight neighbor. so i'm hoping to clarify some rules about double parking in our neighborhood so i know what to expect and don't get anymore 115$ tickets.

this morning as i walked down to my double parked car i was ticketed at 10:05 for double parking on prospect ave at underhill for the 8:30-10:00. i was greeted by not only the cops but a neighbor furiously yelling at me to move my car and that it was the "third time" this had happened. it was strange-- she was already parked in a spot that did not require movement-- and she moved her car only across the street and did not actually drive her car. after i moved my car the cops then told me that they would not have ticketed me but the woman had demanded they write me a ticket after making a scene. i then had words with her and blamed her for the ticket written to me which i believe i didn't deserve.

isn't there an unspoken code that if everyone double parks on certain days?
in my understanding:
1.) move your car if you need to from the double parking side before you are willingly double parked in
2.) give at least 10 minutes of a grace period before freaking out on the person innocently double parked next to you?
3.) stand up for your neighbors because you know you will double park at some point too?
4.) if someone blocks you in before and it was a problem, leave a note

any more thoughts?

thanks for your help all.

  • did you leave your contact info visible? If you displayed your phone and/or address, then your neighbor overreacted. if not, then i agree with her. I regularly double park on ASS days, but leave a note in the windshield and park outside my building so that i can run down and move the car if necessary. I think it's only fair that the person who is bending the rules makes themselves readily available at any time, and that someone who is parked legally should have the expectation of being able to leave at any time.
  • that's really good advice... thanks. it's the first time i've lived in a neighborhood where i could do that and i'm obviously trying to get the unspoken rules down! no i didn't leave my info and will do next time. but she was obviously waiting at 10 to move to other side, and still think she could have waited the five minutes before pushing cops to write ticket.
  • I think she overreacted.
Really lady, talk to your neighbors before you call the cops on them. (loud 4am parties excluded :ncool: ) Sounds like she has other problems.

The info on the dashboard idea is good though!
I wish more people did that.
  • thanks for backin up my feeling that there was some overreacting going on. i think i will go for the windshield info now to avoid further problems!
  • Double parking etiquette faux pas doesn't bother me as much as the jerk on Lincoln Place who blocks off two spaces for his stupid black Hummer with orange cones. I hate that guy. It was bad enough when he was only blocking off one space but now it's two and my frothing rage knows no bounds.

I have had more than one pleasant daydream about keying ASSHOLE into his car, but he's probably the kind of guy who sics his pit bull on neighbors' children, so have restrained myself.
  • that is some xxxtreme parking right there. so unnecessary!
  • i love guys who put cones in front of their houses and so on. pretending the street is there. there is still some of those assholes around nyc.
  • Call the cops on the guy with the cones. Anonymously, 311, whatever. It is absolutely illegal unless he's got the proper tags showing on his dash and signs on the street in advance. Everyone acts like cones are some untouchable force. Pick em' up and put' em on the sidewalk. Same thing with fake yellow lines painted along the kerb. Ignore that shit if the street sign says you can park there.

you don't want to come back with jerk damaging your car :p. since dick would be so territorial about a spot next to his house and think its his! dick enough to put up cones and stuff.
  • I live on St.John's place (2 way street). I cant tell you from experience that you are not allowed to 2x park there in the morning.

As to 2x parking on other streets, I believe it is generally accepted but it is not actually legal. Seems like it is street to street whether you can 2x park. I guess you take your chances. I have a friend that lives around the corner from the fake police station on Washington Ave. he parks there w/impunity because they seem not to ticket there in the immediate vicinity.
  • double parking is generally tolerated during street sweeping hours (except in front of the school on sterling and vanderbilt) but watch out--i've seen the ticket writers lying in wait until the minute the street sweeping period ends (11 on my block) and then immediately begin writing tickets for double parking. no grace period.

and your story is the first time i've ever heard a cop say he/she wrote a ticket because a resident demanded it. sounds like a crock to me.
