Poets, Novelists, Artists and Whatnot — Brooklynian

Poets, Novelists, Artists and Whatnot

Hello All,

My girlfriend and I just moved into a condo on 23rd, I'm a writer (majored in poetry, current playwright), and I was wondering about the Greenwood Heights/Sunset Park arts community. Is there a place where people do readings? Any local theater groups/zines/etc? Who are the local visual artists and musicians?

I've been wanting to check out the open mike, let me know when you perform.
  • Gallery Players is one of the better off off broadway playhouses in the city. It is on 14th Street between 4th & 5th avenues. Every June they do a "Black Box New Play Festival." You can submit plays for this starting in the spring I believe.

The original Broadway director of Urinetown is an alum, as is Harvey Fierstein.

    Thanks a lot!

Having a theater withing walking distance is great, and their upcoming season looks really good.

Ought to be a great event. Tracey runs a monthly series at BBQ on 20th, but this will be a much larger event. She and her husband (also 23rd Streeters) are both poets/artist/designer types. Seem we have a lot on the block :)
