Community Murals coming to Washington Avenue
This was just sent to me from another list:
There are two new Murals coming to Washington Avenue. One at St John's
Place and Washington Avenue and another on the side of Key Food a
little further up the block at Washington Avenue and Lincoln Place.
The theme of both murals is women empowerment, both murals are quite
beautiful and are on display today, Wednesday, July 20, till 5:30pm at
The Heart of Brooklyn 789 Washington Avenue (btwn St John's Place and
Lincoln Place)
The priming for the St John's Place mural will start on Saturday July
23rd from 12:00pm - 4:00pm. Groundswell has an open invitation to the
community to bring their children out and help with the priming and to
see the murals which will also be displayed at this time also.
For more information about the murals contact Groundswell @ 718 254 9782

Yeah... I got this on 3 different e-mail lists! Talk about thorough.
I don't quite understand what they are doing -- the mural is already made? Is this a temporary mural? Is it on canvas or something? -
It'd be really nice if somehow these murals will escape being tagged up 24 hours after they get painted. Drives me crazy.

I think the draft of what will be put on the wall (the actual mural) is on display at Heart of Bklyn and the public is being asked to help prime the wall. I guess they have to make sure weather is accomodating before they can begin putting the actual mural up. But it still sounds interesting.
Dave - I agree about the tagging. I hope people around the mural will keep an eye on it. -
In Philly there are lots and LOTS of murals, and for the most part they don't seem to be tagged. I wonder how they do it. It might just be civic pride. Here's a little info I found on google: http://www.courses.psu.edu/art/art122w_jlh18/student/tremblay/index.html

I don't think people will tag up on them

not trying to sound like a hater, but heres hoping the new murals arent of the "done by local schoolkids" variety... cause, i mean, their goal is lofty and nice, but those murals always end up looking really awful... case and point... the one on flatbush near the chase bank or the one on prospect right offa washington. heh
     -
hey but how about the one's on Houston St. by Katz's? They've done a real sweet one of the Pope and There's an awesome one of Kiss. Then there's the tribute to the latin singer who died in Florida I forget her name.... Those are all pretty cool. And I don't even like the Pope.
-
Herrick, are you referring to Selena? I haven't seen that one.
-
yeah that;s the one! I was gonna say Selene but it's Selena. She's on a wall somewhere in Noho/Loho/alphabet city.

I think it makes sense that the "kiddy" murals stay on and around the school yard walls. That way, passersby can see them, the kids can see them everyday, AND they can observe people admiring at their creative work and feel good. Plus, the murals are relatively more protected from vandalism.

I do also think there is a real place in the city for real, grass-roots "public art" --- by "real" local artists --- it benefits the community in numerous and often unquantifiable ways. -
There's also a brand-new mural on the side of the pentecostal church at Classon and St Johns - I'm not sure if its part of the larger program or not. Its kind of a landscape - with purple hills (no amber waves of grain, tho)
Emily M - yes, philadelphia does have lots of great murals (I'm Philly born and raised)!
I'm actually really excited about the mural projects, especially the one on key food - they have scaffolding up, and yesterday there were some people working on it - one 20-something woman who seemed to be directing some kids in their late teens. -
i think they should put in murals next to schools and other big buildings. would look nice.
Howdy, Stranger!
