Bedstuy Happy Hour
Ok the prospect heights/PS people do this (I think?) is there a bar somewhere that all of us "regs" in bedstuy can meet at? I'd love to meet some new people in the neighborhood...if my apt wasn't so small, I'd say we could throw a potluck but I literally don't even have a kitchen table
Suggestions? Anyone down? I mean, we could always go to another hood if there's no decent bar. Or drink 40ozs on my roof. I'm down for that.

-
Denim Lounge on Bedford and Halsey is an option or how about Tiny Cup?.
-
Lox is probably not too convenient for BS folks since it is in Clinton Hill.
-
What about that new spot Frank White? On Atlantic & St. James.

Dunno, the fish tank is on, and when we eat at Kush we hear "THUMP....THUMPTHUMP.....THUMP...THUMPTHUMP.... -
I would be interested in going to Denim Lounge.
-
What is Denim like? I've never been...at the risk of being called a racist, is it "ghetto?" (You people KNOW what I'm talking about, and it has nothing to do with the racial makeup...if they sell 40s but no draft its not a spot for me
) -
I have not seen that there, but if you ask they might be able to get it for you Carmen. Why would you even ask the question?
-
^What?
-
Carmen, I don't even want to meet up now, that was an ignorant and annoying comment.
-
I feel a fight coming on........

*sigh* denim lounge actually looks like a fancy place to me. there is a nice looking bar on franklin and greene or something called Amar--- (I don't remember the name, can anyone help out?). there's always liquid love... has anyone been there, or the tip top bar & grill on franklin? i always want to check that place out - a friendly dive with a grill would be ideal, don't you think?

Well Carmen it did come across like that because usually when ppl refer to something being "ghetto" or someone acting "ghetto" it is about race because their surely not talking about the ghetto that is boro park.
)
Ghetto- A part of a city, not necessarily a slum area, occupied by a minority group. -
New Casablanca on Malcolm X and MacDonough
-
^^and on the topic of semantics, I find it interesting that I've never had a Jew reprimand me for using the word ghetto. Go figure.
And clearly you've never lived in a southern trailer park, which is also pretty ghetto and inhabited almost solely by whites. Or maybe they count as a minority group because they're poor whites?
ANYWAY
I'd love to check out any of these places. I would say Sputnik but that could be really far for a lot of people who live father into bedstuy. Sputties can be fun because of the layout- lots of comfy seating. -
Yeah cause like I said ppl really think of jews when referring to something or someone as "ghetto" . Did you even read what I wrote?! I said:
Well Carmen it did come across like that because USUALLY when ppl refer to something being "ghetto" or someone acting "ghetto" it is about race because their surely not talking about the ghetto that is boro park.
And of course this is true or you wouldnt have prefaced your post the way you did. You're reply about southern trailer parks and jews wasnt even necessary. -
bknest: What Carmen said wasn't completely out there, as the origin of the word "ghetto" did indeed have to do with the Jews that were crowded into slums during the Holocaust (they were crowded into slums first, and then only later did the Nazis round them up and take them off to the camps).
But that said: Carmen, while that etymology is true, the connotation of the word "ghetto" today is indeed very different; and I think it may have been, at best, terribly naive of you to think that people weren't going to take offense. -
^I guess I'm less sensitive to it because I have ALWAYS lived in neighborhoods that are considered "unsavory" to most (IE poor neighborhoods filled with ALL races.) People have always called where I live ghetto (from the trailer park to the shack under the bridge I lived in to the apartment complex where my car got shot up by drive-bys...twice.) I don't take offense. Those places WERE ghetto. I liked living in all of them, but when you go to the local grocery store and every single person in line is paying with food stamps...thats ghetto. It doesn't mean I, or anyone else living in these communities, are stupid or "less" of a person in any way. I consider it to be a matter of semantics.
I could have said "Is Denim the kind of place that sells Mad Dog 20/20 mixed drinks as top shelf, has folding chairs from 1986 instead of a bar and has porn going on the 8inch tv in the corner?" (All of these are things I've seen in local bars everywhere I lived, save BedStuy since I've never gone anywhere but sputties and that's almost clinton hill) But instead I said ghetto. CLEARLY I am a racist.
Anyway, if I was a racist why would I move to a neighborhood where I'm way outnumbered by those I dislike?! I could move to a poor white community if I didn't like minorities... -
Carmen, you'll notice I'm not accusing you of being a racist; the most I'd say is that you could have exercised some more sensitivity when you chose your words. You may not have a problem with the word, or consider it to be racist, but others do, and it is no secret that others do.
There are words I avoid using around some people because I know that those words offend them. It's not about whether or not I'm racist, it's about whether I'm able to be considerate of the opinions of others when I speak. It's kind of the same territory as me not trying to serve spare ribs to my Jewish friends; I don't keep kosher, but they do, you know?
