To everyone who ran after, tried to stop, stood frozen at intersections with hands cupped over their mouths, circled the neighborhood in vans, alerted me to which direction he was running, etc, i thank you from the bottom of my finally recovering from the shock heart.

My little black and white shih tzu Chaplin, for no apparent reason (at least that i can reckon) freaked out at around 8th ave and 11th st and got loose from his harness and RAN AWAY. This is a dog I've prided in with his unmoveable obiedience and devotion. In any case he ran STRAIGHT into busy 8th ave (rush hour of course) and kept running even though i kept yelling "NO! STAY! STOP!" and "somebody please stop him!"

Several teenage boys complete with heavy bopping bookbags most generously used their track skills in trying to keep up with him and i thank everyone who ran into traffic with and for him as i still am catching my breath speechless at how he managed to make it alive to his home (where he was, we now know, running TO) on 4th st and 6th ave.

I will never know how he did it but I thank all of you who helped and shared your time and concern. Knowing so many of you were involved and did your utmost best to help meant the world to me.

The people on this board are exceptional in that way. That seems to be true for the neighborhoods as well.
I'm a huge advocate of microchipping, in case he runs and someone picks him up. I believe that all vets and shelters are supposed to check new animals for chips. All information, including a picture can be brought up when they identify the dog and your phone number will be the first thing they call to tell you he's OK.
Theres a 90% recovery rate if their chipped.
And judging from your love of this dog, it would be worth the trip to the vet to do it.

I too believe that microchipping is a little extra pet insurance... Inexpensive, no big deal proceedure.

i agree, and chaplin has been microchipped. thanks for the advice!

what's scary is he just got spooked for some still and undoubtedly forever unknown reason and instinct took over (i'm sure he was in his own little wind tunnel) and just ran home... i still can't believe that he's really here, all cuddled up on my lap.

Glad to hear he made it home. I can't imagine how you felt.

I saw the same thing occur over at the parade grounds except it didn't have the happy ending. The pooch took off running in the parade grounds, made it across Caton, sprinted a block and ended up darting out in to traffic on Church with disaterous results. What was even worse was his owner running down the street screaming in anguish.

Give Chaplin a stern talking to...scaring you that way [-X
