BROOKLYN CAT HOUSE IS RAIDED
By PATRICK GALLAHUE and BILL SANDERSON
September 26, 2007 -- Twenty-five cats were removed from a smelly Canarsie house yesterday after neighbors complained about the odor.
The cats were taken by Animal Care and Control.
If they're healthy enough, they'll be put up for adoption; if not, they'll be euthanized.
Cops went to the home of David and Laraine Spivak on 99th Street after neighbors complained to the city about the stink, which they said has been a problem for several years.
The Spivaks said most of the cats came from an elderly family friend who'd helped Laraine Spivak when she was younger. The friend developed Alzheimer's disease, and the Spivaks ended up with her cats.
The couple had 31, and are keeping six.
"None of the cats were victims of neglect or cruelty," said ASPCA Special Agent Joseph Pentangelo. "They just had a lot of cats."

As awful as that story is, I can't help but feel relieved there's someone worse than me out there. My foster cats refuse to leave!

Yeah, that's why I don't foster.
My cat Penny would get too attached to them and would get horribly upset if they got adopted out. He's bad enough trying to get me to adopt every stray he sees.
And I think two cats are PLENTY for one person to take care of. Certainly plenty for me. I have one cat with kidney disease and I spend a lot of time giving him fluids and pills, and the other cat I have to sit in the bathroom with and nag her to eat. (She's perfectly healthy. Just not the best eater. Especially when locked in the bathroom like I have to because the other cat can't eat her food.) I would only think about going up to three cats if I got married.
There's a certain point where there isn't enough time and money to take care of all the animals. I suppose everyone has their set point. But with 31 cats and two people, there's no way they could do an adequate job of caring for them all. -

Well, there was certainly something "not right upstairs" with these people. The cats had crowded them out of their house and they ended up sleeping in their car! -
I know we tend to get owned by our cats, but that's ridiculous!

According to the NYPress, all those cats had to be euthanized because they were too sick to be adopted.
Howdy, Stranger!
