Claiming Constant Harassment, Gay NYPD Files Suit — Brooklynian

Claiming Constant Harassment, Gay NYPD Files Suit

Claiming Constant Harassment, Gay Police Officer in City Files Suit
since we talk about the teh gayness in iran,
a reminder of life in these united states

this fellow was at the 75th in Brooklandia, until they stalled his career and moved him to the west village to "be with his people" after he asked for a day shift because he and his boyfriend were going to adopt . . .
(sigh)

  • you have GOT to be kidding me! nypd is mirroring the bush admin's ham-handed administration of the military? fucking hell. we're finished.
  • Why should this even surprise you Alfy?

The only group I've noticed that the NYPD handle at all well is the developmentally disabled, and that's only in comparison to departments in other major cities, where the treatment is abysmal. I suppose because there are so many more DD people than in other cities, the NYPD have more experience and are less likely to overreact than other departments. But even that varies precinct by precinct. It really depends on the willingness of family members to go to the precinct and educate officers on developmental disabilities, though it does seem that the NYPD is more open to such instruction than other departments.

That said, I never felt that the NYPD were particularly sensitive to gay issues. But that's just an impression. Not being gay, I don't know this for a fact. In general, law enforcement tend to be more conservative than the general population, so why would you think they would handle gay issues with more sensitivity than the military?
  • A friend of mine is a openly gay police officer and she teaches a class to the new recruits on tolerance. Cops were provided the training and still they act like assholes. This sickens me especially since there are so many more openly gay police officers on the force and given the fact that they are having a hard time recruiting they might have lost a whole group of people who would have applied.
  • Where do you get your information from Lilbangledesh? It's obviously not fact based. As for tolerance, the NYPD's members are extremely tolerant of others. There are very strict guidelines that govern the treatment of people and strictly prohibit conduct that discriminates on a basis of "AGE, RACE,RELIGION,CREED,COLOR,NATIONAL ORIGIN,GENDER,DISABILITY,MARITAL STATUS,SEXUAL ORIENTATION,GENETIC PREDISPOSITION OR CARRIER STATUS,PRIOR ARREST OR CONVICTION RECORD,ALIENAGE OR CITIZENSHIP STATUS,OR AS A VICTIM OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE,SEX OFFENSES, OR STALKING" supervisors must report this behavior. Penalties are very severe and can result in termination from the Dept.
Do you think that it's possible that this Lawsuit has been brought against the City for financial reasons?

Unfortunately the "no snitching" rule is the norm among cops.

That is some funny shit right there. I'm sure SOMEONE will be along to argue with it, but yah, that is totally the truth. And ironic.
  • Supervisors that fail to report such activity are also held strictly accountable for such behavior.
  • And a clear sidestep.

Lets hear it KWAC. Are you prepared to argue that a typical police officer upon witnessing another police officer break the rules someone, will report that officer to IA or whatever the protocol is and testify against them as necessary. And that is how it goes down in the NYPD.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic, but what do you believe is the reality of the situation?
  • I find it interesting that KWAC totally failed to read my post for content. He assumed WITHOUT READING that I was 100% antagonistic towards the police when I actually had something positive to say about how the NYPD handles the developmentally disabled. They don't tend to overreact to DD people's behavior in the way that cops from other cities do. And I can state that as a fact because I've witnessed it personally and I was impressed by NYPD officers' tact in handling these potentially difficult situations.

He also FAILED TO READ that what I had to say about cops and gays was an IMPRESSION ONLY, because I did not have enough real life experience and/or facts to make my case one way or another. I was submitting that since police departments are in fact paramilitary organizations and such organizations *tend* to attract more conservative people, they tend to be behind the curve in tolerance issues. This is a conclusion I have reached by LOGIC ONLY, and therefore is a view that is open to revision as the facts come in.

KWAC, rules and regulations are not proof of anything. I have worked for more than one organization that said all the right things about discrimination not being allowed but still had a hostile working environment because of said discrimination. You can have non-discriminatory rules and still have a discriminatory culture. Just because there are rules and regulations doesn't mean people actually follow them. For me to believe you, you need to post about a cop who actually had to pay consequences for breaking those rules.

These rules seem to get broken without consequences all the time. If they weren't, I don't think this thread would even exist.
