Churches in Park Slope

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I'm looking to start going to church again. I need some support and I feel that this might be an option. It's been 11 years since i attended mass so I don't quite know where to start. I guess a roman catholic church would be preferred since that's what i grew up with. If anyone is a part of one, or knows of a specific one, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks much.

  • Where are you located? I don't practice organized religion, but have walked past many churches in the area
  • 7th and berkeley.
  • I believe there is one on 8th ave and 6th st and on 6th ave and 1st street (or maybe within a block or two)
  • I go to St. Francis Xavier on 6th and Carroll, and I like it. I'm not super active there (though I do sing in the group at 12:30 Mass - feel free to say hi) but they have different community groups if you want to meet folks.

There's also St. Saviour's up on 8th Ave; I think it's between 7th and 8th. And I believe there's another North Slope Catholic church, though I have no idea where it is or what it's called.

I also went back to church when I was going through a rough patch, and have (mostly) stayed with it since. I believe it does help me keep an even keel. Whether it works for you or not, I hope you find the support you need.
  • thank you all so much.
  • You have two wonderful churches that I personally know of -

St Augustines on 6th bet. Park and Sterling
St. Francis Xavier on 6th and Carroll

I hope it all works out for you.
  • I'm not much of a church goer, but a friend of mine lives across the street from St. Francis Xavier on 6th Ave & Carroll St.

If I went to church, it would be this one.
  • I know one of the sisters from St. Frances Xavier and she's an absolute doll. I'd never met one before and had only heard awful stories from people who went to Catholic schools. If I wasn't an atheist I would definitely consider going there. The one on 6th Ave and 8th St always interested me too because of the sign they have outside. Something about accepting people of every race, sexual orientation, etc... That would be another I would consider.
  • It might be a bit of a trek for you but there's also St Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church at 249 9th Street, corner of 4th Ave.

    Good luck to you.
  • there are 2 churches on 7th ave on opposite sides of the street...I think one is methodist? they are near Lincoln I believe...

I'm not a church-goer so I can't help you. however they both have beautiful architecture!

    good luck!
  • i'm going to go to xavier and st augustines next week and see which one i fit into better. it would be nice to meet some people too around my age.
  • Would you please post your thoughts once you've visited these churhces? I've been thinking of looking for a church as well. (Looking is maybe a bit of an exaggeration.)

I'm not sure if I would go back to a Catholic church (have you seen that documentary "Deliver Us From Evil" about a pedophiliac priest who kept getting reassigned when he got in trouble? The archbishop of his diocese knew about it.... Horrible.) BUT, because it's where I was raised, it's the only place that really feels I'm in a house of God.
  • Subject: SOVEREIGN GRACE CITY CHURCH

I've been attending this church since February and I love it...Sound doctrine, heart felt, Christ-centered worship music, awesome community...

The worship services are on Sundays at 11 am at Park Slope Elementary School located at 180 6th Avenue in Brooklyn on the corner of 6th Ave & Lincoln.

You can even check out sermons online.

    PEACE!
  • Since we're on the topic, I too am looking for a church in South Slope, but rather than Catholic, a very liberal Protestant of some sort. In my old nabe this was an extremely welcoming and open Episcopal church.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I imagine that there are a few Liberal churches in Park Slope. There are a couple of Episcopal Churches.

I'm not gay, but I look for that little "welcoming" flag. That's a good tip off.
  • I'm a hardcore atheist, but I was raised Catholic, and a priest who was a very close friend of my family is now the pastor of St. Saviour's, and I can honestly say he's one of the greatest human beings on the face of the planet.

His name is Daniel Murphy, and if he's running midnight mass this x-mas the way he used to when I was a kid, it'll be a sight to see.
