  • Don't go. This is the dirty place with the ROACHES on their tables.
  • Subject: Agree - Don't Go

this place has horrible food and is not welcoming unless you are African-American.

I ate there a couple times, enjoyed the food, and never felt unwelcome. In fact, my two friends (also white) and I were asked to be extras in a video someone was filming there one night. It's been a while since I've been, though.

than obviously your statement does nothing to refute my statement that is a result of a recent experience within the past 2 months.

this is a very unwelcoming place to white neighbors. they seem "entitled" to have "their" supperclub.

Look guest, its a local business that's been there for a while. The Five Spot was there back when the only white folks on Myrtle Avenue for miles were the Adami's that ran the hardware store. As a long time business they are "entitled" to serve the food they want in the manner they want to folks that want to eat it. You don't like the food or the atmosphere, don't go. But is what its always been - a black supperclub that caters to folks that are looking for soul food and soul music. Whether that continues to be a good business decision as the neighborhood changes is a question, but the owners as folk who pay their rent/mortgage every month are absolutely "entitled" to pursue that business strategy.

And I'm curious...what do they need to do to make you feel welcome? Or, what made you feel unwelcome?
  • this is gonna be a long one... I can feel it! Bring it on!

*shrugs* I asked a Caucasian gentleman recently what he thought of the Five Spot and he said it was fine.

Maybe people who had a bad experience there and felt unwelcome were being...unwelcome-able?

NOT EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU IS BECAUSE YOU ARE WHITE!!!
  • They still have ROACHES on their tables. Its dirty!!! Everyone that rents the appartment above them complains about the ROACHES that come from them and they move out as soon as the lease is up.

    THE FIVE SPOT IS NASTY
  • i'm white and have never felt unwelcome in there and have been visiting it off and on for about 9 years, since long before the supper club portion opened up. i was prob one of the first people to have a drink in the bar when it opened, in fact! i've enjoyed many music and dance-filled nights there over the years...

    here here!!!!!

by the way, some of my best friends are black and i am a very welcoming person. i was just treated very poorly there - never at any other african american establishment in the neighborhood which i frequent all the time - just this one. really don't think it's me and i would know me now wouldn't i?
  • I havent eaten there in a while, but people, if the place has vermin call the Dept of Health. They will inspect promptly given the heat they've been getting over Taco Bell and KFC.

Sometimes it takes a business to be shut down by the dept of health before they take cleanliness seriously and put correct sanitation and pest control policies in place. The food tastes good, so if sanitation is their major problem, then lets get them to clean up their act.

Sadly, poor customer service can come from one crappy employee and tarnish your opinion of the entire establishment. Other times poor training (or no training) can make poor treatment systemic. Have you been back since you were "treated poorly"?

    Get over yourself, brah.

In the time that I've lived in the nabe I've had nothing up positive interactions with people who work at and/or frequent the 5 Spot. (I can't say it's always been a positive experience with the food but I've NEVER had an issue with the people.)

Speaking of having a place shut down...why has the 5 Spot been shuttered so much recently? It seems to have primarily been the take-out part but this evening it was the supper club part.
  • I don't think the original message informing about the party was suggesting anyone go eat. This is crazy how every dang post turns into a place for whiney whiteys to complain. If you don't like it, don't go. I'm a whitey in the hood since the mid 80's. I've never had any experience with roaches or bad vibes, but I'm not surprised some of you have had that experience. It really makes me wonder what ya all came here for, if you immediately have to remake it into something safe and familiar. There's still plenty of space in the burbs for ya. We like the FG vibes.... what's left of that any more! Five spot is about the only cool place in the hood to have a drink and a dance.
I heard some kind of tragedy happened recently involving owner/or management and that's why they haven't been open. Haven't heard the specifics. We tried to make the event Friday, but it was closed and so we moved on to Manhappenin for our nite out.

Ooh! That's a good one! Gotta remember that one - thanks bro! I think I might use that at the next dinner party I attend.

random white guy: "Man, I would've got here earlier but the train took forever!"

me: "Shut up Whiney Whitey!" (then I roll out, 'cause the night won't get any better than that)
  • i love the 5 spot. I am sorry I missed the party.

It's a great place, good food, great music.
  • Hey Jackson,
LOL. I wouldn't recommend using that line actually. And I guess by posting that in the first place, I made myself a whiney whitey!
Just gets frustrating to see the majority of posts here turn into race issues or class wars. And being a business owner {not the 5 spot}, I know how damaging it can be when someone starts these type of comments. I was cranky and defensive and am not crazy about some of the people coming into what was a great place to live. It seems like so many of them aren't comfortable until it's sanitized and generic. No one seems able to accept the character of a place anymore. What made so many places in and around the city great was the diversity and the edge, and that is disappearing so quickly while being replaced with bland white bread surroundings. These are the same people who call the cops if you play music in your backyard and don't say hello when you pass them in the street.
Done ranting. I'm off the whiney whitey topic. From now on, if I can't say something nice... I'll just remain a quiet lurker. No sense adding to the madness.
And you should refer to me as sis not bro.
