Insurance agents — Brooklynian

Insurance agents

I've just moved to New York earlier this year, but I'm looking to find an insurance agent (either in the Park Slope area or Manhattan) that can provide both health and renter's insurance. Because I work from home for a company based in another state, I have to find my own health insurance policy unfortunately and I have no clue where to start.

Anyone have any recommendations for insurance agents or agencies in the area?

Thanks!

Try Gotham [Manhattan] or Brownstone [Manhattan] Insurance Agencies for renters.
The health insurance industry in NY is quite different than just about any other state. Don't think you'll find policies through brokers, who mostly deal with real estate, life, or automobile insurance.
The NY State Insurance Dept. has a good website detailing how to purchase health insurance if you're not part of a company that offers it as a benefit, and they also rank HMO's and insurers.
You may want to become a member of an association or a group [Freelancers Union, etc] that offers group health policies to its members.
    The website:

  • I had to self-insure for medical for a few months when my COBRA ran out. I went with GHI. I did a search for "self-insure NY" and found a site that gave you multiple options.

Aside from a glitch where they tried to bill me quarterly instead of monthlly, I didn't have any other problems.

I use MetLife for renter's insurance. No problems either, but I never had to file a claim
  • Thanks for the information. I really appreciate your help!
