Does anyone know of any mentoring programs or teen programs besides sports in CH?

This isn't exhaustive, but its a listing of job training and counseling programs for teens put together by the BPL. Its not CH specific but has a lot of programs from this neighborhood

Also, Assemblyman Camara put together a fair for kids and parents earlier this year that brought together a bunch of programs of all types from the neighborhood. I think they put together a program guide as well. Do a search on the boards to see if you can find it. Should include a much larger cross-section of programs.

You might want to check out the Crown Heights Mediation Center on Kingston. They might have some teen programs.

there's tons of programs for teens at st. john recreational center on troy & prospect ave.

i was one of the people who put together the resource fair (mentioned above) for the Crown Heights Coalition. I will go through the database and see if i have any leads for you

It might also be helpful if you give us a little more info about the type of program you are looking for. Is this a kid who is in trouble that needs to get on the straight and narrow? A good student who just needs some more adult attention? A kid with a particular interest who needs someone to help him/her foster it? Someone might know of something that meets your needs outside of the neighborhood.

Only slightly off topic:

There is an amazing program in Boston called MyTown which I would love to see take shape in Crown Heights. From the MyTown website www.mytowninc.org:

Since 1995, mytown has trained and employed over 250 low and moderate-income Boston teens in our youth development program where they have learned about the history of their families, neighborhoods, and city and developed skills to create and lead historical walking tours and presentations for nearly 10,000 Boston residents and visitors.

mytown believes that young people and communities can realize the power local history has in increasing youth activism and decreasing the stereotypes that stigmatize urban neighborhoods.

Particularly in light of the recent landmarking of the district, Crown Heights seems an ideal candidate for the program. I have eight years of youth-based experience and have been thinking about starting the Brooklyn-based MyTown for a while now. But unfortunately, my job has swallowed all my leisure time for the past couple of years, and I just haven't taken the proper initiative. If, however, anyone is interested in helping to develop such a program in the hood, please send me a message.
