Piano Lessons for Adults? — Brooklynian

Piano Lessons for Adults?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Hi -- can anyone recommend a place/person who gives piano lessons to adults? I played for many years, but I'm awful rusty, and would like to take it up again. Ideally I'd like someone with practice space, but I know that's hard to come by...

thanks!

  • Hi! I recommend the Brooklyn College Preparatory Center for Performing Arts. They give lessons for both kids and adults, and also offer music theory classes.

In the Slope though, there is the Conservatory of Music (I think that's what the place is called- the one on 7th near President Street.... someone help me out here....) I took voice lessons there and was very happy with the quality of the teachers and the place itself, which is a beautiful old brownstone mansion.

Let's get this out of the way... I own this business with my husband. We are both musicians...
    Slope Music 271 9th Street
    4th and 5th Ave
Been providing music instruction in park Slope since 1980
65 % of our students are adults.

People think that it is much more difficult to learn to play an instrument as an adult.. From experience.. I can tell you this is not true. A motivated adult, with adequate time to practice is my favorite kind of student because they move through the material quickly and become players.
  • veets, do you have a website or something? I'd love to learn more. thx.
  • Veets - I'm also interested but in learning classical. Your website gives the impression that its mostly jazz - which I love as well, but I want to learn Classical. Do you teach that as well? Any information about rates?

    Thanks,

    sent you a pm message.

If anyone is interested in more information please pm me and I will give you whatever information you request if you are thinking about studying.

I just don't want this thread to turn in to an advertisement.

I post here all the time and respect that personal advertisement of businesses is not the main goal of Brooklynian.

Hey the subject of music lessons came up and I am just putting it out there that we own a music school and have provided instruction on most instruments and voice.... for many years in this neighborhood.

If you want "general information" the site is
    slopemusic.com
but feel free to pm me with any questions you have or specific information that you might want.
  • Subject: Piano Teacher

My friend is an experienced piano teacher, who has graduated from a Musical Institute in Russia, and has recently graduated from Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. She is currently applying for her Masters in music, and also teaches piano to quite a few children, as well as adult clients.

She gives lessons in the convenience of your home in Brooklyn or Manhattan, and has incredible references.

Let me know if you are interested, and I will provide you with more information.
  • Subject: Also getting it over with

I also don't want to advertise but my choice is either to do that or to ignore the request for help. I'll admit I am a new member making my first post, but I was naturally searching for topics that interested me most, so here I am. Anyway, I do teach lessons for adults, and my approach is primarily classical. I regret that I have no weekend or traditional after-work times available presently, but I know some people do have flexible schedules and some adults can come for a lesson during the day M-F. Anyway, you can visit my website at http://www.ivanotes.com and decide if that works for you.

But it is definitely possible to learn piano as an adult! It's all about whether or not you make regular time for practice, and sometimes adults are much better at that than kids are.
  • My friend Jenni gives piano lessons in Park Slope and Prospect Hgts. She went to Berklee and taught lessons for years in Boston, highly recommended! Check out her site: www.sweetforpiano.com
