Lamp repair

edited November -1 in Park Slope
My precious Ikea wall lamp broke. Yeah yeah, I know, just buy a new one...
but I would like to get it repaired instead. I've taken the part down that needs to be fixed and I'm looking for the best place where I can get that done. I'm thinking hardware store, but the 2 stores close to me have really unfriendly or nonexistant customer service. Do you know where I could go instead?

Thank you!

  • I have this book if you want to borrow it.

  • Thanks. I may!
  • What part is it?
  • I don't really know but I believe it has to do with the wires that connect to the converter. One of them looks like there was a short and it may need to be replaced. That's just a guess though.
I would post a picture but don't know how...
  • you're right in getting it fixed, we live in too disposable times
have you tried the hardware store across from key food on 5th?
they might need a little convincing, they would make more money
in selling you a new one, but perhaps with a compliment they can
    be convinced to be helpful

as a kid my family made lamps, and we sold them to stores, they're
not complicated at all, don't give up
  • If you need to replace the rheostat (the gismo which allows you to change the intensity of light from dark to bright without clicking), I just bought one at Tarzian (7th Avenue and 2nd Street) and used it to restore one of my lamps. It cost about $10 and the lamp now works beautifully.
  • The Lamp Warehouse (hope I have that name right) on Ft Hamilton Pkwy repairs all lamps... If you just need this one to work and are willing to not do the do it yourself route that might be a good idea. Also an idea... bring the lamp to leopoldies on 5th Ave.. the guys are just so helpful if they know how it can be fixed they might have the right part and certainly will give you advice on how to fix it.
  • Yes. I also salute you for getting the thing fixed, even though it's just an Ikea lamp. We throw away so much stuff!

Let us know where you end up going for the fix. I might be needing a lamp guy/gal soon.
