Please rec a good OB/GYN in Park Slope area

Or elsewhere in the city if she is great. I had a horrible experience today on my first OB visit at 1 PPW near Grand Army. I am desperate to find a great office.

I feel your pain. You would think that this area had a better selection. I found a doctor on 8th Ave & Berkeley named Linda Sese. I liked her right away. She was quite pleasant and competent. A very polished, old school little Phillipina woman (I was curious because over the phone I couldn't figure out what nationality the name Sese was). She in fact called me herself with results of a lab test. (Little things matter to me) The waiting room is lovely too. I was also able to get an appointment in a very reasonable amount of time. I dunno, it just worked for me after my doctor in Manhattan. I assumed I'd get better treatment the closer I was to Madison Ave. Wrooong. My god, that office was so icky and her lab coat looked like an old dish rag. I kept going there because of my insurance plan and because I just got used to it; it was too hard to find another doctor. So glad to have found someone close to home. Poor Dr. Sese. When I first met her I must have scared her with my little attitude and all my expectations but I wanted to make sure I was going to get the kind of dignity any human being deserves when they are in stirrups! Wow I can't believe you had a bad expereince at 1 PPW. My OB is located at those offices and I thought she was great. I just had a baby less than a month ago and my entire expereince was fabulous. Granted sometimes she did not come off very personable but she always answered my questions and was to the point without any bull which I liked. Plus I thought the office staff was amazing. They always remembered my name and asked how I was doing.. well they still do since I now take my daughter there for her doctor visits.

Sorry you had such a bad expereince. I hope you find another doctor that you like.

i've heard amazing things about dr. fuchs at methodist.

i have a midwife friend who says she's the nly OB/GYN she'd see there, and i met her when my friend had a baby and she seemed fantastic. very down to earth, real, smart.

if i needed to a new one, i'd go to her.

I had a terrible experience at NY Methodist with Dr. Camillian. He acted like I was bothering him when I went in and when I asked the office if I could switch to a female doctor they would not let me. They also made getting copies of my paperwork a hassle. I switched to a doc office in the village and they were wonderful.

I have yet to find a Park Slope-based gynecologist who provides attentive and caring service to women who are not pregnant.

After spending several hours in Dr. Yael Fuchs’ crowded office one only to receive her brisk and gruff treatment, one too many times, I scratched Dr. Fuchs off my list.

Dr. Audrey Buxbaum and the staff at Downtown Women are excellent, but based in lower Manhattan between Eddie Bauer and Armani.

My several experiences with Dr. Fuchs stunk. I waited for hours, received in-and-out service, and was disturbed by the doctor's indifferent attitude and reluctance to answer questions. I’m not pregnant, but my vagina and I have concerns! Maybe Dr.Fuchs offers a better personality to pregnant women opposed to sluts like me. We all have hectic days where we can’t give everyone the attention they request, but when I’m spread-eagle with my naked butt on a metal table, my vagina and I expect a little sensitivity. Perhaps Dr. Fuchs' receptionists are to blame for booking too many people in one day. Who knows?

Midwives rock! A midwife I saw in New Paltz, NY was just as helpful as any gynecologist. Do midwives take health insurance? How do you go about finding a midwife and confirming that she has the critical credentials?

I can't recommend my doctor because I don't really like her, and she's not in Brooklyn anyway.

A bunch of people on the PSP list have recommended Dr. Maggie Carpenter -- she is a family doctor who also does routine gyn. exams.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Dr. Fuchs. I guess her no-nonsense attitude could be off-putting to some. I've been very happy with her, but am not a big fan of Methodist.

I had a good experience delivering at LICH with the midwives, but Debbie Paley and Sally Urang are no longer affiliated with them.

On a similar note - does anyone know any good pediatrician's in South Slope area - affliated with methodist?

i am absolutely in LOVE with my gyno, Dr. Iris Orbuch. She's in SoHo, around Spring and Sullivan. She's open, honest, gentle, and totally matter-of-fact.

I found her on a friend's recommendation and cannot imagine ever going to anyone else.

I've given up looking for good doctors anywhere in Brooklyn. Mid to uptown is your best bet.

My ob-gyn is Dr Shawna Hadley, (212) 599-4400, she has a lot of attention for the entire picture, the rest of your health etc. Her office is near Grand Central.

i had a similar experience. after calling for hours on end and only getting voice mail, i left a message on two different occasions. no one ever called me back.

i recommend park slope midwives. they are an office of all female ob/gyns, who are also midwives. as an un-pregnant gyn patient for the past several years, i have always felt VERY comfortable there. they have 2 offices; the park slope one is on 7th ave, across from methodist. 718 499 3636.

should be, if they're licensed midwives with an MA, i think, they have a nurse practitioner status and can prescribe everything but narcotics

definitely recommend maggie carpenter, too. she turned this horribly scared, doctor-fearing patient around
love her.
she listens so well, is very caring and her practice is small. you get the attention you need.

Routine GYN exams and uncomplicated deliveries are within their scope of practice. If you have anything really wrong with you, they should refer you to an actual OB/GYN.

sorry, i'd rather have my nether regions taken care of by a board-certified OB/GYN.

lots of new stuff coming down the pike--new forms of bc, hpv vaccine--and i want someone who attends the conferences and knows the stuff back and forth and upside down.

I love Dr. Fuchs, she's brisk but thorough, and always answers my questions.

She is always overbooked though, which is annoying. But I guess it's cause her patients love her.

i agree with everything you just said. i have alot of respect for her, too. and even though we fly through exams most of the time, the moment there was a problem (i ended up having a lumpectomy 2 years ago) she slowed down to a molasses pace. then she was kind, gentle, focused, and extremely attentive (not just her regular fast-food friendly self). my problem was an odd case (not cancer, thank god, but something else), and she immediately contacted an old mentor (now a breast surgeon) to convince his team to do the surgery.

now having seen both sides of her personality, i know that the reason why she's so damn quick with my yearly exam is because she is so slow and attentive to the patient in the next room who needs her more than i do this year. s'okay by me.

Midwives in New York state can write prescriptions for anything an OB/GYN can, including narcotics. I have found the midwives I've seen to be much better listeners than the MD's I have seen, and very knowledgable. I wouldn't go to an MD now unless I had a high risk problem, for GYN or OB care.

What about regular GPs in the area? Hating my mid-town GP experience and Dr Carpenter isn't taking my insurance anymore....
