What is your favorite inexpensive red wine? — Brooklynian

What is your favorite inexpensive red wine?

Under $15 or so.

I'm into big reds....not soft or fruity.....

I've worked my way through quite a bunch, but can always use more suggestions.

  • I thought you'd never ask

This is now my "house" wine - I buy it by the case from Prospect Wine Shop on 7th Ave between 8th and 9th Streets...it's absolutely fantastic

Sipavola - a robust blend of 65% Nero d'avola, and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon from Sicily.

$9.99 by the bottle - 15% discount when purchased by the case. They deliver.

or get yourself over to a Trader Joe's and get some Two Buck Chuck! Though I think it might be slightly more than $2 in NYC.
  • Now this is a post I can really get into. I love cheap, but good wine. And since I don't have much expertise, I will share my own current favs but really want some other opinions on good, cheap reds. Recently I am a fan on luzon, jumilla spain 2006. Pleasse don't judge b/c i don't understand the specific details.. I also enjoy Hogue and a wine called Flavio (that is my fav wine ever) that can be bought at Red, White, and Bubbly at 5th and union.
Looking forward to others sharing their secret favs so I can experiment with some new tastes.
did I mention that I love this thread...

    word.
Trader Joes and the wines are great!: $2.99
  • Two Buch Chuck is $1.99 in CA, but $2.99 elsewhere. I wish they hadn't changed the label from "Charles Shaw" to TJ's, because you may be able to give a bottle of Charles Shaw to a host without them knowing you only spent $3 :-)

I had this fabulously delicious Notre Dame du Cosignac 2005 Cotes du Rhone for about $12 from SlopeCellars, but they are of it now :-(

I'm into the Marques de Riscal from Spain (it has a netting over the bottle)

Blackstone Cabernet (although the Merlot is more popular, I like the Cab much better)
  • Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz-Cabernet is a great value wine in that range.

  • Excelsior Cab and Cline Red Truck, both about $10 and both amazingly good.

Excelsior is actually my favorite bottle period.
  • For years, my favorite has been a Bordeaux, Mouton Cadet. They also make a white, but I haven't tried it. Don't pay more than $10 in NY.

yea i did some research, it's a between $2.99 and $3.99 outside of California. Three Buck Chuck and Four Buck Chuck just don't have the same ring to it as Two Buck Chuck though, so forever it shall be known as that by me. I spend a month and a half in LA recording an album with my old band and between us and the producer we put away atleast 3 or 4 bottles of it every night. There was a Trader Joe's around the corner from the studio... bad news!
  • 4 buck chuck? Nuh uh

There was a 60 Minutes story a while ago profiling the winery and saying that all of the neighboring California wineries were pissed off....Charles Shaw owner said that if he could produce a decent wine, with a cork and sell it at that price while still making a profit....well, why shouldn't he?
  • I used to be able to find a great $7 bottle of "Cheap Red Wine." It was a brown paper label with the name in black stencil. Not amazing but unbeatable for the price. I haven't seen it on the shelves in ages...

No help there, just felt like reminiscing.

$7 a bottle or $84 a case. French Cotes Du Rhone. Tasty and cheap. It might be a bit fruity for Flexichick, but you should give it a try.
  • Carnivore - where do you buy that? For inexpensive wine, I'll try most reds once

I haven't gotten it in a while so I'm not sure which if any of the local shops carry it. I used to buy it a lot when I lived in Manhattan, where my local wine shop sold it (it was less than $6 at the time). The link I posted above sells it, but unless you're getting a lot, the shipping isn't worth it for a wine that inexpensive. Maybe caseopele might know a local spot to get it...
  • yay! all of these new finds are going in my Blackberry....this way whenever I'm in a wine store I'll have my list with me

    thanks everybody :-)

Oh I do like Bogle a lot. It's cheap and a very gnarly-vine sorta wine. Has a good deep flavor for a super cheap price, sadly it is under $7 usually out west.
In NY... well we all know NYC prices

  • where can I find Bogle locally? I'm only trying these bottles one bottle at a time, so not into shipping
  • I'm pretty sure 7th ave Wine & Liquor has it. 88 7th Avenue at Union St.
They also have some really nice affordable red wines. The guys there don't mind when I ask for a rec on a good $10-ish bottle  hee hee
  • thanks, mami. Most places are good with that. Of course there's a chick at Shawns ;-) who will help.

Slope Cellars is also very good at that. I just tell 'em I'm a cheap ass
  • Carny, you sly dog.

Full disclosure, I am in some way affiliated with a local wine store. And nope, I'm not saying which one this time. Also, as I do not drink (all booze tastes the same to me), I can only pass on recommendations made by co-workers (who drink like fish, joking!) and customers. Anyway, here's a list of reds we carry that have been recommended, all under $15.

Goats do Roam blend (If you come across the Goats do Roam in Villages, try it. It's around $17 and supposed to be fabulous.)

I know there are more, I used our wineaccess shop to check those but it doesn't have everything. I'm pretty sure we have the Penfolds Koonunga Hill and I know we had that Notre Dame CDR at one time. As for prices, there may be some sort of, ahem, discount for select members of Brooklynian. (You know who you are!) When I get back to work and am less sick, I'll post some more. I'm still a bit mentally impaired at the moment (this post took me 30 minutes to write!).

P.S. flexi and mama posted while I was still typing. I am slooooooooowwww...
  • wow! what a list! thanks, caseopele! I've only seen white NotreDame wines at "the store you're talking about", not the CDR, but if you have any, let me know :-)
  • ooh, and you have the Bogle. I know where I can buy it now!

I used to buy that on Court Street between 3rd & 4th Place, I believe. Good stuff.
  • bump.

i'd like to hear others' suggestions. (this post had been pushed far down page two before its time.)
  • It used to be Old Duke, but I think they stopped making it. Wild Irish Rose is pretty close, and good ol' MD 20/20 is respectable. Stay away from Sisco, though.
  • Astor Wines (now at Lafayette and 4th St) is great for bargain wine. What's even better -- every Tuesday they have 15% off one region, so you can enjoy the usual case discount on single bottles.
    Today is Chile.

I have not had good luck at Trader Joe's -- that's beaucoup plonk they are selling for $4
And whoever is trying to get over with their friends that Charles Shaw is not the same as Trader Joe's has got to be kidding . . .
  • The Mouton Cadet Bordeaux is actually bottled for export only, to the US I think. Turns out we love some French wine at a bargain! (Their white is actually better than the red I think.)

Another similar French label bottled for us special is any george Duboeuf like all the Beaujolais-- St. Amour, Julenas, Moulin a Vent etc. They are awesome - I like Morgon the best. They're all $11-13 and are medium bodied. Do not confuse them with the Beaujolais Nouveau - complete scam and basically nonalcoholic wine.

The Sherry Lehman's next to my job has them for this price, but 59th and Park is kind of far from us. I tried asking in Slope Cellars one day but they scoffed at the mass produced lovelies I sought.

Also, I spent some time in Languedoc, France this Fall and their wines are lovely, and affordable as well, if you can find them!

That was me, and while I'd never tell somebody I brought them an expensive wine if it was Charles Shaw, the label was nicer than the TJ's label and it doesn't scream out "two buck chuck" in quite the same way
