  • Barron can say some things that are really out there. I really dislike his Mugabe position. I have some good political friends who can't stand Barron, and I completely respect their opinions. His support of Mugabe undermines his credibility on other international humanitarian issues.

Unfortunately, he's running against Ed Towns, who may be a little more politically savvy in his statements, but ends up supporting some of the worst Republican bills. Towns has a horrible record on the environment, and he's missed some really critical votes on healthcare. He also voted for CAFTA, et cetera et cetera.

But Barron has had the courage to stand up when nobody else does. He voted against the Downtown Brooklyn Redevelopment plan, which includes a outrageous abuse of eminent domain. The Downtown plan calls for using eminent domain for the destruction of Underground Railroad slave safehouses. Just to build underground parking.

Bill has told me he disagrees with Barron on Mugabe, but on the core issues faces Brooklyn, they agree. Let's focus on the battle in Brooklyn against over development, on government neglect, and on growing corporate influence in every aspect of every American's life. In this battle, Barron has always been on the front line.

Politicians like Marty Markowitz may seem nice and buffoonish, but Marty and Roger Green are really the ones playing a divisive racial game. For all his puffery, Barron does not bring out the racist thugs that Marty did last week.

We don't have to agree about Barron, and I am not a Barron apologist, but I hope you realize that the cross endorsement is not about expediency. It's about uniting to fight the real battle that we are facing right here in Brooklyn.

He says he fights for "affordable" housing but is for a terrible "affordable" housing deal at Atlantic Yards and a pretty bad one in W/G.
He says he wrote the Brady Bill, but he didn't.
Can you show evidence of his support of the use of eminent domain in the Atlantic Yards?
As livetotravel mentioned above, affordable housing is one of Yassky's strengths- he has a long record on this issue.
The same goes for gun control. Yassky was instrumental in getting the Brady Bill passed.

This is what's short-sighted in a national election.

sure, here is evidence of his support of the use of eminent domain (never mind that he's never said he opposes it):
From this pdf, page 2, quoted below:
    http://tinyurl.com/fvsop

Wilson: What do you say to those homeowners and businesspeo-
ple who will be displaced and to those who feel the new development
is an abuse of eminent domain?
Yassky: I hope that it can be done without any condemna-
tion. Forest City Ratner [Ratner’s development group] told
me, and I believe them, that they are working hard to buy
every one out voluntarily. I think there is a realistic chance
that they are going to be able to do it. If not, I’m going to cross
that bridge at the time. I’m not absolutely opposed to condem-
    nation.

I've never heard him change his tune on the above.

and here is someone's listing of Yassky's all over the place-ness on Atlantic Yards:

and btw, Yassky's request to City Council for $3million for BUILD after its President endorsed him is one of the more cynical/nakee political paybacks you would ever want to see. $3 million tax dollars for BUILD??

Not being absolutely opposed to condemnation, is not the thing as supporting "emminent domain abuse"!

That's the same ridiculous link you posted before.

True, but that statement has context; Yassky would consider eminent domain in a case with little public benefit beyond increased tax revenue, which I consider abuse.
