Building keys stolen...lock replacement question — Brooklynian

Building keys stolen...lock replacement question

On the 23/24th, the lockbox containing the building keys for postal service use was cut off our building's front door. While both pairs of building tenants were away for Christmas, our building was burglarized, I assume with the keys stolen from the lockbox.

Does anyone know whether the other tenants and I can have the lock on the main door changed? Our landlord/super is travelling and will be out of the country for at least 2 more weeks. I don't feel very safe knowing that someone who's helped him/herself to our property continues to have access to the building.

On a related note, we called the police almost 3 hours ago and have seen neither hide nor hair....

  • Get the front lock changed and leave a voice mail for your landlord/super explaining the situation.

I hope you had rental insurance...
  • We've left a message and are hopeful that the locksmith will change the locks despite our non-owner status.....ugh. Merry Christmas.

If you have the key to open the existing lock and let him in and can pay him, he will change the lock.
