I second the vote for Stone Park. The best I've ever had.
Regarding Sotto Voce I've never eaten there because I've only heard bad things, but my guess is that they're crowded due to the unlimited brunch cocktails. -
Keep in mind that there have been some extremely bad experiences at Stone Park described on this board, but the details have been suppressed and posts removed because of threat of legal action.

OMG REALLY?
Are you serious about that? -

Completely. I'll never go to Stone Park again for this reason (in addition to the suppressed reasons). -

I think I've said as much as I'm allowed to say about it. It was a few months ago. -

meh, the breakfast is delicious at Stone Park, and they probably do have the best hollandaise around here
Applewood might be good too, but I never go there for brunch since they were jerks to friends of mine one sunday am, even though the owners were nice when they sent them an email to complain about the maitre d's rotten attitude...sigh
mmmm, Stone Park forbidden sausage biscuits . . . bluefish cakes . . .
and those fried oysters at the bar are, well, delicious and they make a nice fancy cocktail . . .
[I'm glad I never had a rotten experience there]
Miriam's is quite nice, friendly low key lively brunch. Those other two are a step up the fancy $$ ladder. Moutarde is a perfectly nice bet too. -

You can't be sued for what is put on a list serve. Park Slope Parents went through this last year when they were sued by someone who was "slandered" on the list serve (some say slandered, some say a story was related that portrayed the individual and their business in a very negative light). But the case was thrown out because it is a freedom of speech issue. Moderators are NOT responsible for what is written on a list serve. So I am sorry you were bullied out of writing about Stone Park.

For the record, the complaint wasn't mine.
But the fact is that you can sue for anything. You may not win, but the owner of this site wasn't interested in a legal battle or the resultant costs over this. I just won't go to Stone Park any more. There are plenty of other places in the area that don't threaten Brooklynian when someone has a negative comment.
All I can say is that since they won't let us discuss it, you'll have to use your imagination. It probably won't be worse than what was actually discussed.
Edited for spelling. -
That makes me never want to go to stone park ever again
-
Can I tell nubnu what happened, if I do it all Mad Libs style?? I remember the story. I'll leave all prominent details out, I promise...

I don't really care what was said since I don't eat there. I just hate to see a list serve buckle under pressure from a bullying business owner. -

Eeek, I'm afraid I'll get reprimanded by Carnivore. I don't want to get anyone in trouble! -
okay lets move on
I dont care that much
I hardly ever eat there
Im just surprised at the reaction
You cant sue people over an opinion

Just to weigh in on the side of the Josh's - in over 20 visits per year for the last 4 years at least, I have never had anything but a great experience at Stone Park - and IMHO - one of the rare, really decent brunch places in all of PS - the.best.burger. and the.best.short.rib.slider - and fabulous bluefish cakes...
NY Times 2 Star rated - from Frank Bruni's column...
"Among the appetizers are plenty of unexpected dishes or dishes with clever twists. Instead of crab cakes, Stone Park serves bluefish cakes, taming the assertiveness and oiliness of the fish by smoking it with alder chips and then flaking, breading and pan-searing it. The result was terrific, and the restaurant garnished the crisp cakes with a fantastic slaw that used celery root in place of cabbage and threw in capers.
A palm-size short-rib sandwich arrived with a fried quail's egg perched atop the meat and poised to bathe it in an extra, unnecessary and wholly appreciated measure of moistness. Tempura-style oysters came with lightly fried caperberries.
Stone Park is yet another example of the expanded dining options in Brooklyn in general and on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope in particular. It keeps company with Blue Ribbon and Al di Là and can hold its head high among them." -

All I can say is there's really no way to balance the good and bad reviews here because THEY WON"T LET YOU SEE THE OTHER SIDE. Use your imagination and assume the worst about what they won't let stay posted here when balancing these reviews.

What exactly could they do if we discussed bad reviews? Sue? Would they want that publicity?
On another note, Anthony's has THE best baked clams. Their pasta and fish specials are fabulous. We always have an excellent meal there. -

Never had the burger at Stone Park but I doubt it's better than Johnny Macks burger. Now that's a burger. -
There are web sites specifically designed to allow reviews of restaurants. Just do a search on the restaurant name and it's pretty obvious what or who the problem is.

I didn't see anything about what was posted here there. Maybe they had a wider campaign of threats of legal action. -
My wife and I went last night for dinner - SP was booming - jammed packed. We had a table for 2 near the the bar - My wife had the baby arugula salad with fresh cranberry beans, red onions and parmegiano reggiano cheese followed by a super succulent and well spiced roasted chicken that came with spoon bread, roasted squash and tomatoes. I had the short rib "slider" with quail egg on a brioche bun for starters and an unbelievably good, perfectly cooked medium rare hangar steak sauced with a brandy/peppercorn reduction. We each had two glasses of wine, Riesling for my wife and a Barbera D'alta for me. We finished the evening by sharing a killer chocolate brioche pudding with caramel ice cream. The evening was unrushed, the service perfect and the food divine. SPC is turning out some of the best food and most enjoyable dining experiences in the 'hood.

its not the only legal action ive heard of against Brooklynian.
while it may not be the case in this particular instance,
The primary problem is that people think freedom of speech includes slander lible and defamation.
Stating such things to a friend is normal.
Putting them in writing for the public to read requires you back it up.
" i disliked the food it was bland" is an opinion
" dont use this car service ! they hire rapists !! "
with no evidence whatsoever to support it, is at the least, injurious.
note that hearsay is not evidence.
there is no doubt in my mind that at least SOME of these posts are vengeance-related :?
( which is the typical "i couldnt get what i wanted when i wanted it instantly , so im gonna biatch everywhere i can and make stuff up" response of the me me me generation, or of a now grown park slope child who never got spanked)
but thats just my perception of it. -

Slander, libel and defamation have nothing to do with it when the experience posted about is true, so that wasn't the case here. This was a horrible experience that a long-standing poster (and moderator) here suffered at their hands, and I have no doubt that every word of it was true. This wasn't someone who just registered to rant about a place. If this were my site, taking those posts down would have been on the condition that no mention of that restaurant was ever allowed here again, since it's totally unfair to leave the raves while deleting the other side. Alas, I don't get to make the rules here, I just enforce them.

come on, really, long time posters?!, moderators!? means nothing. So because users dont post often or feel the need to comment on every mundane topic that crosses this board somehow makes them insincere when they do; excitement and glee about 7-11 moving into the neighborhood? an indication of the level of intelligence here. I'm quite surprised that SP would even care about this stuff.

No, I'm specifically talking about people who register to rant or rave about a specific business, never having posted before, and who generally are never heard from again. I know that you can't seem to grasp this concept, since a significant proportion of your posts are you griping over this issue (which somehow is worthy of your attention more than other things going on in the neighborhood). This is a neighborhood board, and after someone has posted for a while, you do get a sense of what they're like. Furthermore, many of us know each other outside the board as well. So in the case of what happened at SP, it's not just an anonymous rant on a message board, but a friend telling us about something really nasty that went down at a neighborhood business and the business's entirely inadequate response to what happened. -
i cant really question what i am not allowed to read.
but
I do trust your sincerity, Carnivore.
And i believe you when you state its truth.
even so ,
example
there was something horrific in the salsa, of a place i ate at in jersey.
my wife saw it. so did our friends.
its truth
but
i dont have a picture of it
even if i did,
does the picture have timestamp and clearly show that i am actually in the establishment being accused ?
even if i did,
how do you know i didnt pull the offensive thing out of my jacket pocket and put it there myself ?
it IS very very easy to set up a hoax.
just ask any Sasquatch or Loch Ness Monster
so,
despite concerns i may have for others around me,
the only thing i can REALLY do is call the health dept and
not go to the establishment.
can i TELL friends ?
SURE so long as i do so PRIVATELY.
not on a public forum.
as i recall the "dont use this car service , they hire rapists" thread was allowed to stay up because , "there is no evidence to the contrary"
the fact that there was no evidence to back up the initial statement ?
well, that didnt matter. -
Seems to me that if folks wanted to post what they know without concern of retribution to our dear brooklynian, that a site like yelp.com would be ideally suited (and legally firewalled) for such details to come to light.
Just in the case of where matters may not be discussed further here, that is.
Eh, just a thought.
Requisite disclosure: I have absolutely *zero* to do with that site, other than odd occasional fumbling to it from my mobile when I am in a lurch somewhere and looking for food ideas nearby. -
but a friend telling us about something really nasty that went down at a neighborhood business and the business's entirely inadequate response to what happened.........
is called gossip.
