Coffee Addict needs help!

Does anyone know good places to buy fresh, WHOLE BEAN coffee in PH?

I usually trek over to Sahadi's on Atlantic Avenue ($4/lb!) but lately they have been disappointing. The beans have ben dry and burnt.
I like the strong stuff and have tried all kinds so let me know if you have suggestions for types also..

Anything on Vandy?

And, who makes the best brewed coffee in PH anyway?

Delicacies might have some. And Joyce makes Gorilla coffee - not sure if she's selling the beans.

We used to get our coffee at Sahadi's as well... but lately have been stocking up when we go to Fairway. They not only have a great selection (much better and more varied than Sahadi's), but the prices, especially if you get stuff on sale, are great (also around $4-6 lb, and we've been lucky enough to get organic beans at that price). Specialty stores seem to charge a lot more ($10-13/lb.)...

if you order from freshdirect, they roast their own beans in small batches and have a fairly large selection. my current favorite is their organic sumatran french roast @ $7.99/lb. you can get whole beans or they will grind it (choose from 8 grinding styles!).

Definitely Joyce. Definitely Delicacies too. If you want to trek to 5th you can also buy Gorilla at Gorilla.

online? stumptown coffee from portland but if that's cheating ...gorilla coffee. "brazil" is the best.

If you're willing to go slightly outside the nabe, Leaf and Bean on 7th ave is very good also.

....have any of you checked out that coffee/tea store on Bleecker - not far from Murray's cheese shop? They have a crazy bean selection, and I pop in every time I walk by if only to take a whiff.

Just checked out Joyce and Del' on vandy.

Joyce = $10.00/lb for the Gorilla Coffee (whole bean)
Del' = $8.50-$11.39/lb (whole bean)

Now call me crazy, but those are Starbucks prices!!!WTF?
Maybe I should go to Gorilla on 5th and see what they have.
I just think anything over $6/lb is just silly... I do have some principles.

They are both great local places and I want to 'keep it in my 'hood' but c'mon. I am a shameless gentrifier, but this is a little crazy.
I did find a place in the SoHo on Prince+6th that has some good selections and prices ($4-$6/lb) and a place in the East Village on St. Marks...Puerto Rican, I think.

Sigh. I'll check back with Sahadis.
But I will check out the Brazilian selections too

I dont drink coffee and I know its not PH but Fairway seems to have a HUGE selection of fresh coffee beans

Gorilla on 5th and Park offers a free pound of coffee after ten purchases and a free coffee with pound purchase so although pricey it's something. GREAT coffee!!!!

I second that. The quality vs. price on the beans at the MET is hard to beat, the range is reasonable, the hours long and the location handy.

I used to get beans from the PSFC, but their organic fairly-traded hand-reared fully-insured grain-fed lovingly-massaged dolphin-friendly stock was universally disappointing. Give me the spoils of empire anyday, nurtured with the blood, sweat and tears of indigenous peoples and the ashes of their fauna and flora, so long as its cheaper and tastes better.

puerto rico coffee roasting... cheap & AWESOME.

I'm sure some of it is "cheap", but I saw coffee in there that was $40+ per pound.

I enthusiastically endorse the earlier mention of Stumptown, and get to partake a couple times a year when I visit Portland for business.

Most of the organic, fair trade, (shade grown, gently harvested, etc., etc.,) coffee I've had has certainly been a step below the dark roasts I prefer, but over the past week, I've been happily drinking Trader Joe's Nicaraguan medium dark roast -- around $7 for 13 oz -- not bad, but not a bargain in this thread. It has all the right icons on the label, but some may disapprove of their not-terribly recyclable canister packaging, or the store in general. Their apparently non-organic Bay Blend (around $10 for 24 oz I think) is richer, but not by much, and has become my mainstay choice. That's at least city-local, but not neighborhood-local.

Ultimately, what can we do to get a Gorilla branch in Prospect Heights?

There's a little organic shop called something like New Flatbush Natural at flatbush and 6th that has coffe beans in the back. I think they go fo $11/pound which is pricey but since we're on the subject...they also have granola by the pound and other assorted stuff.

Oh, word. I tried it this Spring. It sometimes seems like coffee just tastes better over there no matter what kind it is.

I recommend East Village Cheese in Manhattan- this place fed me through my college years. It would be hard to find better prices anywhere.

I think that's a snob. Even an addict will buy the bodega shit if he or she has a sudden craving or feels a caffeine headache coming on.
I tend to save my coffee bean shopping for Porto Rico on Bleecker, but maybe I'll try Met or Delicacies.

Gorilla is on 5th and Park in the Slope. Their beans are also being sold at Joyce and Whole Foods at Un Sq.

I loooooooove coffee and drink it black. But even I succumb to urges for the bodega stuff, but only with milk and sugar. Milk and sugar makes most crap at least tolerable.

sje, if you like coffee, try cafe grumpy in the city if you're near Chelsea. They have a shop in Greenpoint, but I've never been there.

hmm, guess I should mention why I'm suggesting them.

They have a clover and a Synesso Cyncra espresso machine.

Don't remind me. Gorilla is still the best I've found--however it is so strong I always get awful withdrawal headaches. I never, after 18-20 years, had a withdrawal headache until Gorilla came along.

I still drink it religiously though.
