Power Your Way?
Con Edison seems to want me to choose an energy supplier. Has anyone done this yet? How do you choose? Is this worthwhile?
The companies I have to choose form are:
Accent Energy, Con Edison Solutions, Direct Energy, Econnergy Energy Company, Inc., Hudson Energy Services, IDT Energy, MXenergy, Spark Energy, L.P., U.S. Energy Savings Corp.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Subject: Interesting
But whomever you choose, Con Ed still brings the electricity into your house, reads your meter, and is responsible for the infrastructure.
You may be able to save a few pennies per kilowatt hour. -
I believe that we went with the wind/water powered provider...

which one is that?
one saturday, at GAP this kid was giving his schpiel for Sterling Planet
i asked that more information be sent to me. he asked that i sign
something in order to receive their literature.
next week i got a bill from Sterling Planet saying i owed them money
i haven't had time to call them up and protest. that i didn't sign up for anything
anyone else have ANY experience with Sterling Planet? -
(first post -- be nice!)
I switched to the ConEdSolutions 100% wind plan a few months ago. The rate they offered me was 18.5c/kWh for supply, locked in for a year, and I still only have one bill. They also have a mixed Wind/Hydro plan that was a little cheaper.
When I activated my account, I filled out a postcard requesting info from Sterling Planet and a few others, and none of them ever got back to me, so I stayed in the system. I can't say if that's due to third-party supplier incompetency or ConEd acting like a monopolist. If the latter, it worked for me. Permit me the fantasy that somewhere upstate, wind turbines are spinning on my behalf.
You can switch your account here: http://www.conedsolutions.com/green. You just need your ConEd account number. -
thanks for the link, and thanks for the reminder. i've been putting off the switch for no other reason than sheer laziness and/or forgetfulness.
like WhyFi, we went for the wind/water combo. it's nice to be green!

It looks great... now if only the govt. would put a fraction of the subsidies that go into nuclear into renewables, to make it slightly cheaper rather than more expensive, we'd be on a winner. Demand would quickly exceed supply, necessitating rationing and envy, prompting private investment in greater capacity, not to mention more R&D into greater efficiency, until the subsidies were no longer needed.

You're making too much sense, which is just crazy talk! -
anyone have any updated opinions on this???

I had a HORRIBLE experience doing this awhile back - don't recall which alt supplier I chose, but about a year later I got an enormous bill from them because they had somehow neglected to bill me throughout.....I refused to pay on principle.....went to a collection agency.....took me YEARS of explaining to the reps who called/hounded me that I wasn't paying and why. Fortunately being prompt with mortgage payments mitigated any potential damage, but it was a major pain in the rear end. Never again.
