Close to home indeed. 

I wonder whether the perpetrator is either of the two men whom I pass on my way to the train in the morning, asking for money. (They often sit on Empire near the Dunkin Donuts.)

Is either man (or both men) of the variety that they try to pick a fight with anyone who walks by?

...trying to provoke on the basis of race, sexual identity, etc?

@whynot_31 - I've seen one of the men get verbally combative once when a guy didn't give him money. This individual also turned on me once verbally when I ignored him as I walked by. (I never even acknowledged him or gave him any reason to attempt to interact with me.) That's the extent of any irregular behavior that I have witnessed. 

I do keep an eye on what this one guy does whenever I walk by him in the morning just in case something off were to happen again.

I find this incident interesting in that it happened at 10:45 in the morning.

Hopefully the perpetrator is dumb enough to still be walking around the neighborhood in the same clothes he was wearing on camera, and has a hammer on his person.

....such lack of insight helps the police do their jobs.

I don't recognize this man. I do recognize the building. 

This crime is so odd and so random. How does one protect oneself from such nonsense?
