Pels Pies and Co: New Beer and Pie Shop to Open on Rogers between Lefferts & Lincoln — Brooklynian

Pels Pies and Co: New Beer and Pie Shop to Open on Rogers between Lefferts & Lincoln

  • Booze and sweets are fine. I'd prefer a decent diner (like The Usual on Vanderbilt) to come out here.
  • What a ridiculous idea. Just what the community needs another watering hole. We all know that selling pies alone will not pay your overhead, so just add beer and wine. Hope they vote it down at CB9 meeting on Monday
  • Watering holes are not equal to watering holes, as shown by the experience north of EP.  There are places that cater to singles, and others that have come more recently (like Covenhoven) that are more relaxed and family-friendly and provide a comfortable place for friends to meet with or without their kids for an afternoon snack and a beer.

A beer and pie shop sounds lovely to me.
  • Are there many bars in this area?  I haven't been here in awhile but I remember it as being almost completely bar-less.

Also, I seriously doubt that a pie-themed bar is going to get rowdy.  I agree with eastbloc that it sounds more casual and possibly family friendly (or date/post-date).
  • I'm all for it as well. I think this will be great for the neighborhood. And just for the record the owner is applying for a beer & wine license only - no liquor.

Several years ago, CB8 concluded that it should rarely completely not support an applicant's request to SLA. They seemed to have reached this conclusion after the SLA granted permits over their objection. Now, CB8 merely tries to make its support contingent on closing earlier than the law requires (ex by 2 AM, instead of 4 AM).

If CB9 was to not support a pie and beer place that closed by 10 PM on work nights and midnight on Fri and Sat, I suspect the SLA would issue the permit anyway.

If the pie place doesn't have a viable business model, the market will tell them, and they will either adapt or close.

...the fate of the pie and beer place will rarely be decided by the SLA or the CB.
  • Butter and Scotch for pie and cocktails and Little Buttercup for pie and beer/wine a few blocks away. Odd coincidence?

Further than a few blocks.    I do not view them as being in competition with each other.

  • True, further than a few blocks, but my sentiment is the same.

And how wouldn't it be competition? People who live east of Franklin or in PLG often head to Franklin to hang out. The more new businesses open in their neighborhoods, the less likely they'll head to Franklin.

As a result of only having beer, I imagine this new place as being someplace you could have a beer with your pie. Very small dating scene. You stay 30 minutes.

On the other hand, I view Butter and Scotch as being a place you have a cocktail, and might have a slice of pie. You stay 1 hr. You come with someone good looking.

I don't imagine anyone walking a long distance to either one. Hence, I see them being distinct.
  • Yea both are in 2 different "neighborhoods" I live close to little buttercup and I go to butter scotch but once this is open if they are just a good I will be hanging there.
  • I have to see what Little Buttercup's vibe is once it opens. I see Butter and Scotch as being more like a bar that happens to sell desserts (which may or may not be pie).

The two establishments are technically in two different neighborhoods, but they're not that far apart either. Both are about equidistant from where I am.
  • Hey all its opened I stopped in today: it's called Pels pies and co . Pies pretty great. They are having live music and pies tonight!
  • Ate in backyard today.
    Beer and wine now available.

  • does anyone know specifically if they have non-sweet pies suitable for, say, dinner? asking for my partner who is sweets-averse (crazy, i know)
  • They have savory pies, including some really delicious quiches. One slice may not suffice for a meal, but tasty they are.
  • Yes their quiches are amazing!
  • Just had some pie. Sweet and savories. I lovely place.
