Just in time for the Holidays, the Brooklyn Flea arrives

We've talked about 1000 Dean for years:

As you are aware, the Brooklyn Flea will make it home beginning this weekend.

Now, it is time to talk about The Flea:

  • its open.. people everywhere when I drove up Franklin.!
  • I live a block or so away and I think that this, more than any other opening, pushed Franklin Avenue from "gentrifying" to "gentrified." I'm not ascribing any positive or negative to that--I just wanted to remark on how different Franklin Ave felt Saturday afternoon.

I checked out the Flea. Same thing as at the other locations, maybe with a little more food, but I was surprised how much space is in that ground floor of 1000 Dean (never been inside before). I'd be interested to see if they do other events during the week or off season.

I think once it gets a little colder, the Flea will be a major destination for new residents who have parents visiting from out of town.

It is warm, not too chaotic.

...you don't have to actually buy any of the stuff, you can spend some time looking at the antique type stuff, and then have a beer.

Then, have a nice dinner at Mayfield.

  • I thought it was really great this weekend, and much better than the outdoor locations for the goldilocks reason...not too hot, not too cold, just right.  although it was a bit smoky in the food area.

a nice food 'court' with plenty of seating, in addition to berg'n, and not as crammed as i thought it would be.

i expect it to become a destination and asses-to-elbows crowded, with the coming holidays.
  • @whynot_31 you literally just described my Saturday. Were you following me??
  • I will simply say that I believe my research methods to be valid, and legal.

Dare I suggest to the Flea and Bergen than Santa should entertain children in the underused west room of Bergn?

  • Yes, there should be a hipster Santa.
  • We shouldn't wish too hard: the last thing we want is Santacon Brooklyn in our back yard.
  • too late. santacon is already in the neighborhood. it was here last year.
  • I stay home that day so I missed out of control Santas in Crown Heights last year.
  • This is telling:

"The market was jam-packed yesterday afternoon — in fact, my friend and I couldn’t deal with the level of human crush at the Berg’n beer hall right next door, so we hied off to Cent’anni on Franklin Avenue for lunch, then returned to shop."

I think hipster Santa is different than Santacon Santa.

Hipster Santa may be an arts major.

Santacon Santa may have an MBA.

Mod note: Please continue any further discussion of this year's Santacon in the SantaCon 2014 thread, in the Williamsburg,Greenpoint, Bushwick board

Yes, I think people over 35 are going to want to enjoy a quieter, nicer meal than Berg'n or Smorgasberg provides.

...restaurants like Centanni, Mayfield, Bar Corvo and Sunshine may get a bump from the Brooklyn Flea.

  • BTW, the Flea and Berg'n are both doing a very good business at the moment.

I don't know if they are buying, but there are lots of shoppers.
  • Anyone know if either Bergn or The Flea have changing tables in the bathroom?

And if not, where is a space in the neighborhood that does?

    Thanks!
  • I can confirm that bergn has changing tables in the ladies bathroom! I think they also have one in the men's bathroom.

Awesome! Thanks so much!!  Heading out with family tomorrow, but we now need to really plan our excursions...
  • I didn't see one in the men's bathroom today. On one hand, is that sexist? On the other, at least it means my wife and not I have to do the changing.

Sexist or not just sucks that I'll have to change the kid. Also, sucks if he wanted to go out without me. Seems heteronormative to me.
  • There's a family bathroom at Berg'n. Men and women are both welcome to use it.

    awesome!  Thanks so much!
  • Xlizellx clearly needs to complete this chapter of the thread by posting photos of the changing table.

  • Whoa that's huge. Sorry!

    a fine looking progeny.

At some point, we will get around to taking photos of the food and antique vendors.

    ...give us time.

This weekend, hundreds (perhaps thousands) of pedestrians walked along Franklin and Classon to access the Flea.

As they walked away from the venue, it did not appear that they were carrying a lot of new purchases.

The biggest winners in this game may be the landlords, and the food and drink vendors.

    ...not the antique vendors.
