I'm normally against balkanizing these message boards into little compartments... but this may be the right thing to do:

  • Hmm, I feel a little like I've been banished from the DH web sites for living on the wrong side of Washington. :(
  • Well, this is what I was afraid of. It's not too late to undo it.
  • How is the Croho community to determine whether they prefer a separate board? Perhaps the following dialogue will offer some ideas:
DENNIS: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week,...
    ARTHUR: Yes.
DENNIS: ...but all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special bi-weekly meeting...
    ARTHUR: Yes, I see.
DENNIS: ...by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs,...
    ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: ...but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more major--
ARTHUR: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
WOMAN: Order, eh? Who does he think he is? Heh.
    ARTHUR: I am your king!
WOMAN: Well, I didn't vote for you.
ARTHUR: You don't vote for kings!
Alternatively, you could just have a poll...

(Yes, I do know that I am a total nerd.)

uh, i probably got the quote wrong... but back when i was in highschool and was a big time dork i probably could have recited the entire scene for you, in the right accents and everything. uh.

  • Subject: Increasing traffic to the Crown Heights/Park Slope boards

Right now, the Park Slope board is rarely used, and I see a similar fate for the Crown Height boards. Why? Because the only way to get there, or to know about them, is if you are familiar with bulletin boards and realize that there is more than just where the "Message Boards" links take you. If you didn't know to click on the Dailyheights Forums link, you'd never guess that there were other boards here besides the main one. Maybe if each community board was linked from the main page, or if the link from dailyheights.com went to the index, rather than directly to the Prospect Heights board, would these other boards get used more.
  • Well, the Park Slope board doesn't really "exist" ... it was just a system test. I was playing around with the administration controls for this board and set it up to test the message board capabilities. I had no motivation to develop or promote it. But instead of deleting it, I left it up on the theory that someone, at some time in the future, could actually use it if they wanted to.

I feel differently about the Crown Heights board. That neighborhood is changing so fast... a message board like this could really capture some of interesting debates and discussions going on right now.

You're right that I should link it from the front page. However, the best way to encourage participation in that board is for you guys in "CroHo" to tell people about it. If you run a blog, for example, link to the Crown Heights message board in the sidebar. When there's an interesting discussion on the board, blog about it.
  • Nice, thanks.
