Island Village - West Indian — Brooklynian

Island Village - West Indian

A new spot just opened up at the intersection of Classon and Lincoln called Island Village. It is on the North-East corner of Lincoln and has a neon sign.

It's the former chef from the Islands restaurant.

The food is a bit cheaper, speedier service, take out service, and offers a different twist than the others.

I had the Fry Chicken with Guava sauce.

Get it while its still good.

  • I saw this place the other day, but I wasn't sure if it was new or just a face-lift for a place that had already been there (there was another place there before, right? :?).

I'll have to check it out soon!
  • Its brand new. They had their opening during the West Indian Day Parade.

He is doing a good job so far and the best part is that he is fast and offers delivery.

I hope that he keeps it up and gets business on that block.
  • OH MY GOD.

I know it's old news, but I just tried this place for the first time and it was AMAZING.

    WOW.

the fried codfish cakes appetizer was especially life-altering; the fried chicken was only incredible.
  • How was the service? Also, do they have any meatless dishes?

    Thanks in advance...
  • I've only been a couple of times, but the owner is super-nice. He also told me that one of the things I'd ordered (one of the shrimp dishes) would take him about 10 minutes to make, in case I was in a hurry, which I thought was thoughtful of him.

And I just checked the menu I brought home and they have six vegetarian items on the menu: veggie chicken (with brown stew, jerk, or curry sauce), curry vegetables, stew peas, veggie meat loaf, calaloo saute, and eggplant surprise.

It's yum. You should check it out.

i was specifically referred to this place by a vegetarian, who is IN LOVE with it.
  • does anybody have their phone number?
    do they deliver?
i can't wait to try it!

They don't deliver, but they do curb service if you have a car. It's worth walking over too, though. :)
  • actually, they DO deliver...or at least, they delivered to me last week.
  • Oh, cool! I haven't been in there in a while -- last time I went they weren't delivering, but I guess they've started now.

This is probably very dangerous information for me to have. :)
  • i finally went there a couple of nights ago, and the food was fantastic! After i ordered (to pick up) they said that it was going to take about 20 minutes because they make it fresh, so i just asked them if they could deliver it instead and they did. Yummy (and hoooooot) jerk chicken and tasty veggie curry. The rice was excelent too!
  • They are really good. Their jerk lamb is also amazing. Spicy, spicy, spicy!
  • I attempted to give this place a try for lunch and was very disappointed. When my wife and I went to order, the server stated that *none* of the six vegetarian dishes on the menu were available until dinnertime. I then attempted to order a variety of sides, and all the server had to say was "we don't have many sides, either". This is a common complaint that I have with Caribbean restaurants, that many of the dishes listed on the menu are unavailable or that the restaurant is out of certain supplies. I had hopes that Island Village would be different, but it's more of the same. I still might try them for dinner, though, given all of the positive feedback about the food on this thread.
  • i think it's worth another try. the things i've had have all been meat, but the biggest fan of the place i've encountered is my vegetarian neighbor.

i've had a late lunch there, and it's true that they did not seem up to speed (although they did have what we ordered). i agree that they should be up to speed if they're open, but, well, they are better at dinnertime.
  • anybody has their "new" number? the one on their menu 347 787 4842 is not working, and (considering the nasty weather) i am too lazy to go all the way there. I really wanted some delicious caribean food tonight... snif, snif.
  • I went there last week to get me some roti. He didn't have any. Couple days later I called, same thing. Couple days later, went in, didn't have any. So it became a running joke.
So I give him my number, and tonight (right after I ate dinner), he called to tell me THEY HAVE ROTI. I'm going tomorrow and I'll report back.
    He is a sweet heart.
Kenieva, I went to save the number in my phone and I accidentally erased it instead. I'm so sorry on so many levels.
  • thanks for the thought Watchuwant...we went with delicious Taro Suhi instead. Next person to go to Island Village, pleas ask them for their number!!!! Also, the website they have posted on their menu doesn't work...
  • Someone please post that number! I've really been wanting to try this place!
  • No problem, I have one of their takeout menus:

347-787-4842 (Edited to add: Oops. Didn't catch the posts above that said this number's no longer working. <EmilyLitella>Never mind...</EmilyLitella>)

That's the number that keneiva said is not working.

    Oof, sorry, missed that post.

That's the only phone number on the menu, so I don't know what else to suggest except for good ol' 411.
  • I'm going this afternoon. I shall post accordingly, quite soon.
  • K! Got it! 718.483.9447. Now let's go drum up some business, shall we????
  • sorry for the multiple post but............www.islandvillagecafe.com, which I just tried and it doesn't seem to go anywhere...unless my dumputer is just ass. Someone else please check to confirm whether my dumputer is indeed, actually ass. Thank you.
  • When I try going to www.islandvillagecafe.com, I keep getting this. I don't understand it.

  • Wtf? Did you do that Carnivore?!?! It's like, so sublime....;)
  • ok- chicken roti-really, really good.
Ox tail- roomie #2 says it kicks ass. he also says they have the best sorrel in the area (he's from Grenada, he would know)
mini beef patty's- they don't make them there- but they were really fat little suckers, and they were awesome.
Roomie #1 got chicken salad with the fry chicken on top- really tasty. iceberg lettuce.
codfish fritters- really good, come with mashed avocado on the side.
He's so nice, and I just want to say that he's struggling to keep the place open (maybe that's why he's short on menu items). He probably keeps in stock what's popular, in order to balance things out.
SO! I encourage people to go there (seating is also nice there, big 2 and four tops), order there, meet Ron. Yeah, there are a lot of west indian restaurants here, but most are small take-out joints. He's got a nice thing with this place, and I really would hate to see fail for no good reason.
    Happy eating!
    Once more, with feeling- 718.483.9447
  • I didn't know they weren't getting enough business, and I agree that their food's great and they're nice folks. This is a great place to have in the neighborhood and I'd *hate* to see it go under!

Beyond just going there ourselves, maybe there are other ways we can drum up business for them? I'm emailing a couple of friends who sometimes write restaurant reviews for the NY Press and Gothamist and suggested they check Island Village out. I feel confident that if they try it they'll dig it. Anyone else know any reviewers? Carnivore, don't you contribute to Zagat's sometimes? Also, if any of you are on Chowhound, maybe you could mention it there?

Before anyone makes any accusations of shilling (since that's been such a problem on some of the other boards lately) I just want to point out that shilling is when someone who has a financial interest in a place pretends to just be a regular Joe Customer off the street and posts about how wonderful his/her business is. For people who *are* Joe Customer to spread the word about a good business that they like is a completely different matter. Just sayin'.
  • Dude, I would be RICH if I had a stake in any of the places I've promoted.
