Little Dishes now Little D — Brooklynian

Little Dishes now Little D

edited November -1 in Park Slope
The restaurant on 7th Ave, South Slope
has been compelled to change their name, due to copyright on the word DISH
ridiculous
but then I haven't heard of the corp sueing them.

I quite like the food/drinks there. It's quality, and so on the pricey side.

  • yeah, i like them a lot, too, though i haven't been in a few months. warm mushroom salad is to DIE for if you're a fan o' fungi.

i read about their troubles last week, and i find it really unfortunate. i'm sure it wasn't cheap to have to change the sign, the letterhead, the promotional materials, the website, etc etc

hope it's the only bump in their road, cuz i think they're a worthy addition to the restaurant roster.

jeez, I didn't even think about all that . . . what a giant drag for a really nice little restaurant! I imagine the start-up for such a place can't be easy, or cheap.
  • I agree the food is good but.....I dropped a lot of money and LEFT HUNGRY. I mean when they say Little, I guess they weren't exaggerating. Maybe they can just change their name to Tiny Drops of Food? I just don't want a return to 1980s cuisine (even if prepared in a less pretentious way) where you spend a lot and leave hungry. I have never gone back there since we dropped over $100 and had to stop off and buy a pint of Ben and Jerry's on the way home.
  • that's an unfortunately dining experience, to be sure. however, i've never had that problem. i'm guessing, however, that part of it has to do with the mindset going in -- tapas portions are never going to be the same as the ginormous portions we've come to expect in american restaurants (and that's all of us, K-mom. it's not directed at you personally). i've gone to this eatery with a group of 4 or 5 friends, ordered a handful of little dishes (plus an extra order of the aforementioned mushroom salad), and had bites of each one. yeah, with the wine it probably came to $50 a head, but we all left satisfied. full? not tremendously. but utterly satisfied.

If I go out and order Sushi ala carte I leave full and the portions are small. This is why I left Little Dishes feeling ripped off.

I think most people living in NY are pretty sophisticated and don't expect half a steer to arrive on the plate when they order. I would like to be full but not stuffed like a pig when I leave.
  • Enjoying food to me is about savouring the tastes, the textures and the presentation - and I was really impressed by all three at Little Dishes. It's not about how 'full' I am afterwards. If you are full from eating sushi that's because of all the rice (carbs). Food is not about size, it's about appreciating culinary subtleties.

New Yorkers are always quick to call themselves savvy on any subject, but I can't believe the amount of mediocre restaurants and pushy waiters in this city - and all the thousands of customers don't mind. At Little Dishes I feel like I can enjoy really well-made food at my own pace and not have my tapwater refilled every 30 minutes or someone intruding to offer ground pepper.
  • I agree, I don't understand this "I need to leave full philosophy". In Europe the portions are smaller and the people live longer. It's the experience and tastes, not the quantity. Foreigners are aghast when they witness the portion size in US restaurants.

I agree that the food is pretty good at Little Dishes and I agree that in many parts of the country portions are obscene. But I guess, call me old school, when I drop $50 to eat, I don't want to ruin the taste by having to get some Ben and Jerry's on the way home.

I kind of think this American Tapas craze is really novelle cousine repackaged for 2006. Because although I think the food is good at Little Dishes, I wouldn't say it was a taste experience that blew me away.

I like the portions at 360. Not huge, you can try three courses and you feel good when you leave. Just my preference I guess to enjoy good food and not just picking like a bird at a tiny little dish.

I agree. We ate there once and it was good but not great. I wasn't crazy about all the little plates -- the things I ordered didn't really seem to work together to make for a satisfying meal.
