Bike store reccomendations — Brooklynian

Bike store reccomendations

Hi everyone, newbie here.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a bike store anywhere in the city for someone who is not, you know, the sort of hardcore biker that New York (and Brooklyn in particular) seems so full of. Somewhere that is willing to deal with people who don't have 2 grand to spend on a bike or know all the coolest brands or whatever. I know there are a lot of stores, but they seem mostly focused on the hardcore bikers who join bike gangs and whatnot. Anyone have any good experiences?

Thanks in advance,

  • YES. To reiterate: Mike's Bicycle Station on Vanderbilt is a great shop. He really loves bikes, he gives a pretty good deal, he really loves bikes.

    Second.
  • I was in the same situation about a year ago and went to the bike shop on 5th Ave near Park Place in Park Slope and received really horrible service so I didn't buy a bike there.

I ended up going to Metro (Canal Street Bicycles) near the corner of Canal and 6th Ave. The service was great. The sales man (not really a man I think he was about 17) talked to me about my intended use of the bike and told me that the best bike for me was a basic Trek hybrid. I purhcased a Trek hybrid for $250 that I am really happy with.
  • The bike store on Vanderbilt and Bergen is good. As is Dixon's on Union between 6th and 7th Ave. Mr. C's on 7th Ave between 46th and 47th street is also very good. R&A, the place you mentioned on Park and 5th is a pit. They have great bikes but the attitude they give you behind the counter (where the boss' are) sucks ass.

    Hehehe, bike gangs!?
Verrazano bike's is my favorite in the city. I got a high-end bike there, my girlfriend got a regular-person (non-gang member) bike there. We love the service and they're cheaper than R&A on 5th or most places (all places I've been to) in Manhattan. The only downside is that it's a bit of a schlep to Bay Ridge from PS, but you know, gotta go where the love is!

And yeah, Verrazano bikes has a LOT of good yet inexpensive bikes. In fact, if you have a price range in mind, I'd be happy to suggest bikes you might like, I know a lot about them.

Wow, rightly said. GREAT bikes, TERRIBLE customer service, and more machismo bullshit than a bike store should be able to contain! To be fair, people have told me they are better during the week day hours and just not so good on weekends. Weekends, they SUCK!
