Last minute no parking signs — Brooklynian

Last minute no parking signs

Sometime when I'm driving around looking for a spot (like last night), I notice a block or two littered by the NYPD No Parking flyers for a date a few days later. Maybe its for a block party, or film shoot, or some construction project. They usually say cars will be ticketed and towed. I don't understand this. Sometimes I park my car and then don't go to it for a few days, until the next weekend. What if they put up those signs during those few days and you don't even have a chance to be notified you have to move it? Is there some law around this? Has anyone ever been towed in this situation?

  • I recently saw a similar posting near my office in lower Manhattan. It was for a Sopranos film shoot and said that cars left on the street would be towed to a "nearby street." I thought this was strange and didn't understand if it was implying that the cars would be returned to their original positions after the shoot.
  • what I have seen them do is move the car and either move it back or they leave a number for you to call and find it.
  • For movie shoots, they do move the cars without ticketing or towing (maybe because they don't want residents getting angry and mking it difficult for them to shoot movies in the future?). However, for block parties or things of that nature, you can be ticketed and/or towed if you don't move your car in time. The catch is that whoever is planning the event has to post the notices something like 72 hours in advance (maybe 48, I don't quite remember) in order for them to legally have you fined or towed. So let's say you move your car for street cleaning on Friday and don't see any signs, but then Saturday your car is ticketed or towed for a block party, you can fight the charges. This happened to me when I lived near 6th avenue, and I didn't have to pay the ticket. Getting towed, however, may be a different story. Once those guys have your money in their hands it's probably impossible to get it back.
  • You'd be best off moving the car yourself. Not only do you not want towers touching your car, but sometimes they move it to an illegal spot and there is no recourse if you get a ticket and towed for that.
