Subject: Prospect Perk Sold: Mary's Going Home

So, the rumor is true. Mary (Perk's owner) introduced me to the new owner of Prospect Perk, who will be taking over the operation fully starting October 1.

Those of us that have had the pleasure and privilege of getting to know Mary over the last couple of years are going to miss her tremendously. She is the heart and soul of the northeast corner of Flatbush and Sterling.

So, make sure you say goodbye and wish her the best before 10/1.

  • I hope the new owner improves the coffee, or that place is going to get killed by Joyce.

I like the coffee at Prospect Perk. Of course, Mary is the star attraction, but the coffee and the vibe and the decent baked goods make it fine by me. It's no Joyce, but I hate a crowd in the a.m. anyway. And I'm sort of fond of her slacker children employees.
  • If only the same thing could happen to muddy waters

I completely agree. I would go there so often if only their coffee was better (Gorilla!)
  • I'd go there if they had a bathroom. They used to make you go to Biscuit, when that gem was still around.
  • Perk has become a real home to us moms of young kids (obviously) and it ain't the coffee or the benches or even the toys and books Mary keeps near by. It's Mary. She's been the grandma to my daugther and mother to me when ours is afar. Having her there for us everyday, rain or shine has kept me sane on some tough days. My daughter actually calls Perk "Mary's House." Without her, yep, it will be there, and yep, the new owner may even keep the toys and welcome the kids, but it will never be the same.

  • I had a frappe thing from there a couple weeks back. Yuck.

I take the 2/3, and never pass by Prospect Perk in the morning. My husband takes the Q, and walks past there every day. He used to buy his coffee at PP every morning, but a few months ago began taking a travel mug full of homemade coffee with him. This was pretty radical behavior, given that we have a years-long habit of buying our morning coffee (used to live 2 blocks from Naidre's in the South Slope). When I commented on the change, my husband replied that it was mostly that he didn't like PP's coffee. I think he mentioned having to shove through a wall of strollers to get at the counter, but it was mostly the (lack of) coffee quality. :)

Yeah, I like the place, and the people who work there are nice and I kept going there for a while despite the mediocre coffee. But now that Joyce's is an option, I don't see myself going to PP for coffee anymore unless there's some major improvement on the coffee front there.
