Friend's birthday tomorrow...need a cake — Brooklynian

Friend's birthday tomorrow...need a cake

Subject: Friend's birthday tomorrow...need a cake

Anybody know what happened to the Cakeman Raven in Ft. Greene? I was going to order a red velvet cake for my friend's 30th but his site is gone, and when i called the number that is listed, some strange verizon voice mail picks up.

I thought about going to joyce's but, the online menu only has tarts on it. It also says they want 48 hrs advance notice for orders...

sometimes they have cakes already made - give them a call.

also, isn't there a cake store on atlantic between hoyt & bond?
  • If you need a cake in a pinch there is a nice bakery on Court Street and Sackett called Court St. Bakery/Pastry. I know a baking supply store opened on Washington (a few doors down from Natural Heights) and I think someone said they make cakes there. Maybe Why Fi can confirm this.
  • I noticed the new sweet melissa's on 7th ave btwn 1st and 2nd had some really nice looking cakes in the window. There's also little red hens on 8th ave btwn 11th and 12th, it's a little further away but they always have good stuff.
  • swet melissa's is awesome! of course, i've only eaten their little things, like madelines, tea cakes, etc., but i bet if they had full-size cakes for sale that you wouldn't be disappointed :D
  • cousin john's on 7th @ berkeley has cakes. i've never had a cake but i like their other stuff.

If you mean the College Bakery, I'm sad to say it closed. I hear Monte Leone's is closed too (I loved their mini pastries).

Yeah I know I mourned that place for a long time after it closed :(. But there is another one on Court Street (near where the old OTB used to be).
  • Mmmm....Red Velvet Cake....

Cake Man Raven is still there and still the best. Did you try 718.694.CAKE?

I don't know about that one but I do miss Monte Leone's. And for what it's worth, if you want to take a chance if none of the above suggestions work, a friend of a friend is trying to start up a baking business, doing catering, small parties, whatever. I'm pretty sure she does red velvet cakes. I can probably find and forward along her information if you want.

Maybe you should have your friend post her info in the Classifieds - It would be great to know someone who can make a custom made cake to your specifications :)
  • Cakeworks on Washington between Prospect and St Marks.

Doh!! Now why didn't I think of that? That's an excellent suggestion, I'll pass it along. She's a Brooklynite but I don't know how if she's aware of the boards.

And to keep the posting on-topic, I know that the cakeman in Fort Greene was in biz 2 months ago, but have no further reports on that front.
  • I would recommend getting a cake from Downtown Atlantic on Atlantic Avenue and Bond. Excellent cakes, tarts and cupcakes.

Two Little Red Hens is awesome!
  • Abu's on Fulton and Bedford has excellent carrot cake! --E.
  • Hey, Burningorange -- let us know where you decided to go and what your experience was, if you did end up getting a cake in the neighborhood!
  • BAY RIDGE POP QUIZ
which is the place with the incredible carrot cake?
Someone brought it to an office party four years ago, and I have no idea where it's from . . .
  • Cake Man Raven just updated his web page, it looks great. Seems like everything should be rolling along at the Greenpoint shop.
