I found this. Is it still in effect? — Brooklynian

I found this. Is it still in effect?

edited November -1 in Site Issues
I have been watching this board for a week or two and was trying to figure out if you all know each other or are strangers.

Seems there are happy hours, and get togethers amongst some people.

I thought it would be a good place to find out some information about the neighborhood since I just moved here at the beginning of the summer.

Instead, I find a bunch of name calling and arguments and information under threads that have nothing to do with what the subject is.

I understand that I'm fairly new and may not get all of the "inside jokes", but what confuses me most is the moderator's behavior. Looking at the top, it seems that many of the people listed as moderators seem to be part of a little group that likes to put each other down and are more likely than others to go off topic.

I saw a post called "Board Administration" and read what is listed below. If I want to be a moderator do I need to start calling people names? That's just not my style.

Is there someplace else to get real information on the area without this type of nonsense?

1. Take the high road. By definition, the mod has to stay neutral and judicious on issues of board behavior and etiquette, and be an example for other users. It's also bad form to post mean or sarcastic comments in response to another user, no matter how stupid or callous the user is being.

  • me again - I meant to post this under the other thread below (the one abut the moderators) but I can't seem to figure out how. I haven't registered because I'm not sure if I will get spam and stuff if I do.

So, I apologize if I am not following proper posting guidelines.
  • Gosh, can't imagine why no one is jumping in here. Must be tied up in "nonsense" at the moment.

    you're registered as Flexichick.

    Welcome to the internet. :)
  • Hi Guest.
    1. Be brave and register. You don't have to put your e mail address so there won't be any spam.
    2. Some people know eachother, some don't and some are just internet acquaintances.
    3. If you post something that you want information on, I'm sure some on the site will help you.
    4. As for inside jokes. Some you'll get and some you won't. Get over it.

This is an online society. Some people are cool, some are assholes, some want to help you out and some want to make fun of you. Sounds like the real world to me.

Get an avatar and a name other than Guest and join the party baby
  • I think Street Shooter's advice would be dead-on, if this were really a guest. However, this post did indeed come from an IP address that has only been used before by Flexichick. Hmm.

I'm not a moderator here so I can't see IP addresses. Are you saying that the guest was posting from an IP address that Flexi posts from?

the only people posting from the guests IP address are that guest and Flexichick. as such, the guest is Flexichick. thus, the guest is a registered user sockpuppeting as a guest.
  • If that's Flexi, Im really disappointed.
  • street shooter wrote: If that's Flexi, Im really disappointed.
I agree that would be so tacky
  • That's bad form.

    I have a confession...I'm Armchair.

  • I would identify this particular form of sockpuppetry as "astroturfing," or creating a new account in order to create the impression that lots of people agree with an opinion (i.e. fake grassroots support).

street shooter's advice is great for actual newbies, thanks for posting it.

Many people have been successfully sued by the RIAA on less evidence, FWIW.

Armchair steve. Now I'm disappointed in you :(

This is absolutely NOT true. Just because a registered user and a guest post from the same IP address does NOT mean they are the same person. There could be 100 people using the same IP address to post. If 10 people are sitting in the same coffee shop, their posts will all show up as coming from the same IP address.

Good to know. I apologize to Guest and to Flexichick for the assumption.
  • Last word to guest:

Despite the fact that you are apparently brand new to the board, you do seem to have a very nuanced understanding of how the boards work, who is a moderator, the rules of the forum, etc. Since you took time to familiarize yourself with the Rules, you probably saw the following:
If you feel any of the rules below have been violated, it is best to PM the site administrator (PM button at the bottom of this post). If you post a complaint on the main boards, it might be deleted, or moved to the “Board Administration” area.
If you have any specific complaints about users - moderators or otherwise - I'm happy to address them. While I'm not locking this thread, please don't continue to use my forum to complain about the behaviors of other users. I'd ask that you direct any complaints to me, because I will address them.

Finally, I'd encourage you to register a username so I don't have to reply to you in public (like this) in the future.

    Thanks!
  • Look at this earlier post by Flexichick:

    2. The X button means delete. Delete obvious spam, though we haven't had much lately.
    3. Delete obviously antagonistic/obnoxious/obscene/threatening posts, but let a site moderator know about it (you can send the text of the message).
3b. If you are even slightly unsure about whether something should be deleted, then please don't. Ask a site moderator first.
    4. Please never edit people's posts. If you feel strongly enough that a post is out of bounds and needs to be edited, then let a site admin know.
    5. Set the tone for the board by answering people's questions, and by regularly shouting, "YOU WILL RESPECT MY AUTHORITY!!" Beat your chest for effect. (Ha, ha.)
    6. Mod powers should come and go. Not arbitrarily, but if somebody falls off the face of the earth, or consistently acts more like a user than a mod, then a change is probably in order.
    7. Be alert at all times for the return of "the" anonymous guest.

I'm still reading rule #1. When did that one go out the window?
Then reread the "guest" post above, from an IP that only Flexichick has ever posted from before. Then draw your own conclusions. I think it's pretty obvious what's going on.
  • dailyheights wrote: Just because a registered user and a guest post from the same IP address does NOT mean they are the same person.
What you say here is, technically, true, but I think your interpretation of it is far-fetched, as Carnivore describes. If anyone else had EVER used that IP address, I'd dismiss the assumption, but as it is, I think it's awfully fishy.

I also find it intriguing that Flexichick hasn't shown up here since the sockpuppet posts were made (though I'll withhold judgment on that fact until later in the week, since it's perfectly plausible that people are gone for the weekend).

Not that Andy needs me to defend him, but it seems like someone had to say it, and frankly I'm a little dissapointed I didn't think of it first.

That said, if it looks like a fish and smells like a fish...
  • Well, Emily wins the prize for detective work. I wasgone for the weekend and not reading the board...not even when I received 3 emails from people asking me if somebody was using my ID or if I was posting anonymously.

I found out who "guest" was. Somebody who, well sweetly, but terribly misguidedly, decided to "defend my honor" or thoughts along those lines. The reason the posts sounded similiar? Because the person read my previous posts and, well, agreed with me. I had quite a conversation with them about it, and don't expect something like that to happen again. Then again, I didn't expect it to happen the first time, so what do I know?

The IP address is one that was used by me once before. A long time ago, from a computer that's not mine

Having worked in technology since 1992, I know enough about IP addresses and how to trace them that I would not be stupid enough to do something like that.

Knowing even a TINY bit about my personality, I'm obviously am somebody who has NO trouble speaking my mind.

I do/did have issues with some of the moderators and their behaviour, but have either stated so on this board (under Flexichick) out in the open or directly to DH if appropriate.

Carnivore - as for your assumption that once saying that I wasn't going to read the Pitbull thread that I would continue....well, maybe most people would, but after realizing that I had no interest in either Pitbulls or Steve's interpretation of Paris Hilton's supposed fellatio skills, well, I decided I didn't have interest in reading it any more. I would guess (and probably bet money) that Steve had a comeback, but I don't have any interest in really knowing what it was and am fine with him having "the last word" if he feels he needs it.

Well you just proved my point that you did in fact continue reading it (since you read my response to you saying that). That's why I laughed when you said:
Flexichick wrote: On that note, I won't be reading this Pit Bull thread any more.
See, I don't really care why you said you weren't reading the thread anymore. I was laughing because I knew you were still reading the thread. It's a classic Internet ploy to try to look like you got the last word.

Nope. Wrong again. Where I read what you said was in Quijibo's post about a moderator's responsibility (go back and check that thread - it has nothing to do with pitbulls or Paris Hilton). I didn't see it on the other thread, because, well, I wasn't reading it. I think you might be describing your own behaviour or other people's.
  • I guess that's your story and you're sticking to it.
  • Carnivore wrote: I guess that's your story and you're sticking to it.
You can believe me, or not. It doesn't really matter to me. I'm sure you've said things that people haven't believed before. Do you waste the energy defending yourself? I'd guess only if you thought their opinion of you really mattered.
  • For someone who repeatedly claims to have no interest in what I have to say, you sure seem to say that a lot. I'm not sure what to tell you as you seem to have a problem with me, but peace.
  • Steve, you skeeved me out right away with your PMs to me, and you know I told you so right then. I will just choose to ignore you and your comments from now on and you are free to do the same.
  • Flexichick wrote: Steve, you skeeved me out right away with your PMs to me, and you know I told you so right then. I will just choose to ignore you and your comments from now on and you are free to do the same.
I was hoping you would bring that up here. Yes, I did PM a compliment to Flexi after she said something self deprecating. It no longer shows up in my sent box, but maybe she has it. Feel free to post it if you do.

It wasn't particularly skeevy, but when she bitched me out about it, I profusely apologized for it, even though it really wasn't anything. She didn't respond but has been harpooning me ever since. Classy!
  • Yah, that's the problem Steve. You have no idea what's creepy and what isn't. Or what's awkward, and what isn't. This is a sentiment that has been said about you privately more times than I can count.

And as for chewing you out about it, well, if you consider me saying "I don't appreciate your comments and please don't PM me again" and never once mentioning it to you again "harping on it", well so be it.

    On that note, I'm finished.
  • I think we need to invite Jerry Springer to the board.
