For the first time in five years, I will not be in town for the Labor Day Parade. I have yet to decide how I feel about this.

I started this thread today because I noticed parks workers putting up the protective fencing up around the greenery at GAP.

Haha. The crowds will arrive just in time to trample to newly re-seeded Eastern Parkway malls.

Yup, the fences on the malls will actually be taken DOWN to accommodate the crowds.

It is likely that I won't be in town this year, but time will tell.

I'd love to hear peoples recommendations on the best places to hit while touring/enjoying the parade. I'm taking a friend from out of town this year. Usually, I enter the parade from Underhill, go eat and walk around, drop by The Islands for more food, then stop by a bar. Any bars (with backyard or patio) I shouldn't miss? Any food stalls you recommend?

It terms of bars, I am increasingly becoming a fan of Branch Office, on Rogers near Union.

How can I get in on the march, just maybe not all the way from Schenectady? Last year there was some fence jumping going on but I'd rather avoid hurdles if possible.

Various politicians will let you march with them if you wear a tshirt with their name and photo on it.

Show up before the parade begins at EP and Utica.

Diana Richardson is looking for marchers but not sure what kind of music will be involved. I'd be lying if I said I'm not in it for the soca!

The patio at Ebbets Field will be off limits (even to residents) from Sunday through some time on Monday.

The patio area is above the railing of the wall in the foreground seen in the picture below:

Looks like pretty poor logistics planning for the end of the evening. The last couple of years the parade has ended 6-7pm and there has been a push to get the parkway back open.I know it has been open and turned over to Sanitation before 9pm. I just walked out, and the parkway and all the arterial streets are still closed leaving plenty of opportunity for folks to just hang out.

They just opened the parkway again, at around 10:30.     The service road still has vendors cleaning up near Washington.

To be fair, this stuff is on the ground in crown heights year-round.

It is, but not to the extent it is post-parade. Usually, I can steer my dog away from trash, bones, and glass here and there. But today, it's absolutely everywhere. And I think the people who organize this parade need to be responsible for it. The city does a great job cleaning up as much as they can in a short period of time. But if an organization holds a street party, isn't it that organization's responsibility to return it to a better condition? And when are we getting our trash cans back?!?

The parade is not "run" or "organized" by an organization to the degree that a concert is run by MSG.

For better or worse, no small group of individuals is in charge. This event largely "happens".

It would seem the West Indian American Day Carnival Association runs the parade as they're the ones on the poster at the top of this thread. I used to have a client who worked for them for a few days during the setup and such and he got paid fairly well for it.

What could possibly go wrong?

The way parade permits work in the city is that you pay a fee to receive your permit. Your permit fee includes costs for things like sanitation and police. So, WIADCA already pays for this. Could more be done to limit trash on the streets? Possibly, but remember that this is also affected by many other policies, such as the decision to remove trash receptacles from the commercial strips (with the though that their presence actually increases street litter).
