proposed homeless shelter at Bedford and Halsey
https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20160823/bed-stuy/proposed-homeless-shelter-on-bedford-avenue-gets-pushback-from-residents
How in the world is this a good idea? I mean, obviously the developer does not have to take into account the HUGE homeless shelter for single men at the Bedford-Atlantic Armory. The developer does what he does. But if the City approves these plans, there will be so many upset people in the Bed-Stuy and North Crown Heights neighborhood.

One must not merely declare that they do not want a shelter in their neighborhood, one must find an alternative location....for the city to remain in compliance with right to shelter law, the shelters need to be built.

The arguments about community saturation have to mean something, right?
-
No community wants a shelter. ...they will all claim to be saturated or something. That's why such projects are not subject to community approval.

Herkimer Place is going to be a local place to score K2 for years to come.

If you, like many other residents, feel that this area has a disproportionate amount of homeless shelters, then please sign this petition:https://www.change.org/p/mayor-de-blasio-and-other-elected-officials-stop-the-proposal-for-a-homeless-shelter-at-1217-bedford-avenue-brooklyn-ny
The petition lays out a very compelling rationale, including that:- The proposed facility is within .2 miles of a Shelter for Singles with 350 beds, on top of 11 other shelters overseen by DHS, located within the CB3 boundary.
- The proposed location is within .3 miles of 3 elementary schools and 2 children’s playgrounds.
- The need for additional shelters within Community District 3 limits was not included in current or previous Brooklyn Borough President’s Strategic Policy Statements and Community Board 3’s (CB3) Statement of District Needs.
- The proposed facility is within .2 miles of a Shelter for Singles with 350 beds, on top of 11 other shelters overseen by DHS, located within the CB3 boundary.

but there's literally a map of homeless shelters that shows bed stuy to have literally the most in all of brooklyn. if someone in carroll gardens or gowanus were to claim to be over-saturated by homeless shelters they would clearly be lying

In such situations, the communities argue the opposite:IE Their area has insufficient methadone clinics, mental health facilities and hospitals to support a shelter (or in this case, a drop in center). The residents would not receive the services they need in the location, and they would become "proponents" for the well being of shelter residents....fun, isn't it.

We now return to the show:
"City Council Member Robert Cornegy Jr. (Bedford-Stuyvesant, Northern Crown Heights) on Monday will host a Town Hall meeting on the proposed homeless drop-in center at 2017 Bedford Avenue off Halsey Street.
The meeting comes after KCP recently reported that Bed-Stuy’s School District 16 already has the most homeless students in the borough and the most homeless shelters.
The Town Hall is slated for 6 p.m., Monday, Aug 29 in Restoration Plaza’s Multi-Purpose Room, 1360 Fulton Street. RSVP at (718) 919-0740."
