Coach Bed-Stuy public school students in literacy programs
Volunteer with Behind the Book,
a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public
school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs,
accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms,
where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects
based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to work with students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage them and encourage their progress on their projects.
This program needs your support in Bed-Stuy. To sign up, please contact [email protected] with the program code and date(s) you'd like to volunteer:
PROGRAM 212WG-W
Writing Coach: Friday, May 12th - 9:30 – 11:00 AM
About the program: Second-graders read Bottle Cap Boys by Rita Williams-Garcia, about two African-American brothers who make tap shoes with bottle caps so they can dance in the street. After researching the rich history of New Orleans and its cultural contributions, students will create musical instruments with found objects. Writing coaches will help them finalize essays based on their research and experience making instruments.
