SUNDAY: Prospect Heights in Jackson Heights — Brooklynian

SUNDAY: Prospect Heights in Jackson Heights

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I posted this on a previous thread, but I thought it deserved its own thread:

Jackson Heights is a magical place in a borough that doesn't get the credit it's due. Scrabble was invented in Jackson Heights! I love Queens. I left my heart in Qns.

We're (the wife and I, Andy (?) going on a little walking tour on Sunday, if anyone wants to join us. We'll check out the Historic District, which is full of Garden City complexes, the first in the country. We'll eat our way up Roosevelt Ave. and the side streets. Pop over to the greenmarket, inspect Little India and search for a Sri Lankan joint Andy's hot for.

Come enjoy a beautiful day with a jaunt through Jackson Heights.

Please no Qns-hating posts.

  • I think we have a visit to the in-laws planned for Sunday, but this sounds fun. My prior trips to Queens--usually in search of various ethnicities of food--have been marred only by how dashed difficult it is to figure out where you are and where you're going. Little India sounds very cool; hope you guys have a good day.

It's funny- growing up in Bklyn, we always had nothing but disdain for Queens, but I've come to appreciate it more and more. It's definitely come a long way from Archie Bunker (although there are still some parts like that).

And anyway, how could a place that spawned the Ramones be all bad?
  • Don't forget RUN-DMC [sic], Tony Bennett, and poet Hal Sirowitz.

Ditto, except I've lived there (Jamaica, Far Rockaway) and was looking hard to move to Sunnyside/Astoria/LIC before we decided on Prospect Heights. Queens definitely has a different vibe and I do appreciate it -- though I'll never live there again if I can help it.
  • I'm trying to convince my wife that we should move to Jackson Heights. It's cheaper, has more to offer, like better schools.
  • You should try out Maharaja Sweets and Snacks which is on 37th Avenue right near the train station....73-10 37th Ave....they have the best Malai Kofta in the world...
  • You should visit the famous or infamous Jackson Diner.
It lost its appeal for me when this excellent Indian place left their former spot (Apparently a former Diner) and moved up the block into a larger space in order to accomodate the crowds.
The original setting was very tight without a waiting area (Very similar to planeat thai's original spot on Bedford), so you earned your spot by hanging outside in the extreme weather
