New restaurant on Union Street?

Anyone know anything about the new place that opened up on Union Street between
Fourth and Fifth? It's right in the middle of a residential block, but looks really cute.

    What's it called?

Actually I did some digging and answered my own question. The place is called Palo Santo and they serve Latin food. Sounds good! And it's still BYOB...

Thanks for the link! The place looks great- I'll definitely have to try it. I wish they'd put the menu up on their site though.
  • looks like it could be tasty, but i agree -- they need to post a menu! where are they exactly in relation to Maria's. it's the same block, right?

ooh ooh -- just went back to the site to look some more and they have Melipal Malbec. hubby loves that stuff. can't say i mind it myself
  • We ate dinner there Friday night and really enjoyed the meal. The menu's pretty ecelectic, I get the feeling that it will change often. We shared a bunch of Latin-inspired small plates: a quesadilla with cojita, corn-coconut milk soup, seared tuna over a salad of apple and fennel, plantains and a delicious pumpkin bread pudding and key lime pie. The bill came to around $50, not bad! Service was very attentive and the space is lovely inside. They said they are open for breakfast and lunch every day as well. We'll definitely go back.
  • this sounds perfect. gonna have to check it out!

    Me too!!!!
  • Me three!!!
  • They have good coffee and one of those hand crank citrus juicers that is on every other street corner in Mexico. If you've got $3 and five extra minutes in the am, and the R train on Union is your stop, the world just got a little brighter . . .
  • This place sounds fab. Will check it out soon
  • Went in for brunch, party of three. Yes, good coffee. We also had:

    Bean & cheese pupusas ($7)
The fanciest presentation of the bunch, a wide square plate with two little freshly-made corn pupusas topped with avacado and cabbage. The proportions were better in one of them, and the fresh corn flavor was something I've been missing...

    Tamales ($7)
Regular ol' pork tamales, served with two small dishes of guacamole (seemingly with lemon) and a salsa verde made without tomatillios I think. They are quite good, and completely blow away the version across the street.

    Corn chowder ($5)
This was the star of our selections: it almost had a massaman curry flavor to it. A robust chowderiness, with a slow-growing, subtle heat.

    Tortillas for the table. ($2)
These are freshly made corn tortillas, each a little smaller than a CD. We got about six. They were actually a little dry, but the freshness and thick, corn flavor were pretty much enough on their own. I should've asked for some butter to eat them with, but we generally put whatever we had on them and they were nice.

    Coffee creme brulee
Overcooked and therefore somewhat impenetrable at first but tasty.

Seems like they're still getting their bearings, but I'm v. happy to have it around, especially if their prices are always in that range. I took a card anf found that their chef is "Jacques Gautier", formerly of La Brunette.
  • thanks for the report, Finn. didja happen to notice whether or not they've got their liquor license yet? last i heard they were still BYOB.
  • Nope, not yet. Went for dinner the other day and it was still BYOB.

Dinner is much more expensive but was terrific. We weren't starving so we split a couple of sides and an entree. The rice and beans were simple but perfectly executed, the fresh tortillas were waxier this time and delicious on their own, a potato soup special (I forget anything specific about this but it was delicate, smoothly melded – he's got soups down), and a chicken served over Yighantes or whatever you call them, in which all flavors blended at exactly complement each other and the meat was cooked just to the edge of doneness all the way through, which was really impressive. The two of us polished the plates and left entirely satisfied.

This restaurant will take your breath away! Homemade tortillas, fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, and every ingredient is fresh fresh fresh! I went in by myself, after a few mornings of a dog walking/juice stop. The interior is beyond beautiful--and cozy romantic in the back. I felt TOTALLY comfortable eating solo, and can't wait to try their ever changing dinner.
