Today is the yearly Bastille Day celebration on Smith Street in Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill (between Pacific and Bergen).

It's a nice time to drink pastis on the street and watch the petanque tournament, but also a much better place to grab Bar Tabac's legendary merguez frites sandwich. Two links of merguez and frites on a nice french demi-baguette. Add mayo, ketchup, and mustard, and it's one of my favorite sandwiches around. Plus, it's huge and costs but $5. They also have a chicken frites sandwich which substitutes a grilled chicken kebab for the merguez.

Pit Stop also has a booth set up selling saucisson/cornichon and pate/moutarde sandiwches, as well.

They usually go until 5 or 6, I believe...

Joyeux la jour de la Bastille (observé)!
