hey, does anybody know what goes on in the space above el carneviento? a coupla days ago i noticed people doing something that looked -- from the little i could see thru the windows -- like tai chi (sic?), and then last night there was fairly raucous dancing and clapping and chanting going on. just curious what the space is and what all goes on there.

It looks like they're holding capoiera classes. You should go watch sometime, but I don't advise participating. My knees were in so much pain and the place I used to take classes had a bit of a cult-like aura. I have a better time watching other people do it.
  • They teach Capoeira Regional above Gran Castillo de Jagua. I have some friends who study there and have only good things to say about the teacher and classes - I prefer Capoeira Angola, so I have not checked it out myself.
  • you should call the cops on them. new york's finest will get to the bottom of this.

Neat! Thanks for the explanations. I didn't exactly know what Capoeira was, so I looked it up....

And youngsnitch, there's a difference between curiousity and fear. If you don't like one, at least don't inhibit the other.
  • i'm all fear, all the time. those dancers could be smoking weed.

do you ever get off your soapbox?
  • don't you dare roll your smily eyes at me, ma. i stay unbearably on message -- the snitches-get-stitches campaign takes no days off.
  • on message and way the fuck off-topic.
  • Call 311! Make a noise complaint! Call 911 if it doesn't stop, especially if it's going on after 10! Those dirty Brazillians, ruining the soft atmosphere of Flatbush Avenue! What are they thinking?

Now you're just being silly. You want to talk about a guy getting tackled for no reason, fine. That's a real issue. But when someone shows interest in what's going on in a building, and nothing more, you need to chill. This is one of the reasons that the charge of racism is so much weaker than it should be - non-thinking people throw it out at every opportunity. Save charges of racism for the racists.

No shit. If I wanted to get preached at all the time I'd join the goddamn Park Slope Co-op. While I do find him occasionally amusing, the finger wagging is tiresome.

WE GET IT. You are THE ONLY person on this board who isn't racist or classist--the rest of us are just a bunch of white gentrifiers. Thank you for calling us out, oh enlightened one. And I hope the drug dealers and petty criminals you spend so much time defending never rob or assault you the way they've robbed, assaulted and harrassed some of the people on the boards.

This is seriously uncalled for and insulting to me, personally. My post was obviously a well-intentioned inquiry.

Wouldn't an intellectual curiousity about a cultural activity be rather contrary to racism? The kind of interest it seems someone supposedly opposed to racism would welcome and encourage?

It's awfully hypocritical to constantly harass people on this board about their alleged racist motivations, and then show the same (or worse) lack of respect you are calling others out on.

If you have a message, it's become very distorted. If you don't have one, STFU.
  • Just to be clear, in the post above, BigGuy did not write that.

Well, if you want to get preached at all the time by me you'll make the tired gratuitous Co-op reference. It's a grocery store, not a re-education camp. I've never been preached at there. It's a great grocery store.

    back to the topic, Capoeira
Does Edna Lima teach there by any chance? I did a seminar with her a million years ago and it was awesome!

The co-op is a dead horse that I don't mind kicking. I'm glad you have had a good experience--but I know I'm not alone in my low opinion of the place. To each his/her own.

Edna's great, but it looks like she isn't teaching at that location:

first i find a crazy thread about something that scares me (admittedly i got excited that there may be some sort of meditation class in that space - what a bummer that it wasn't)

and then i see someone i've known for years - how grand!

    hey erikka :)

and yeah, no co-op, it's sccares me. and it smells funny. but i understand it's good if you like stinky cheese (i don't though)
