Commute from PS to LIC — Brooklynian

Commute from PS to LIC

Does anybody make this commute on a regular basis for work? What's it like? How long does it take?

Do you take the subway? Which one(s)?

How about driving?

I had somebody call me about a job there, but I don't know how long the commute would take......

Thanks

p.s. Starting on the F train (or driving) are my only real options

  • there are two ways to do it (though both suck and i would drive there if possible)

    f train to g train.

b69 to bqe exit. turn corner and catch b61. (though b61 does come from red-hook, so i'm wondering if there's a way to catch it closer)

do the former, and don't do it at night because, as i recall, the LIC g-train stop was where the woman got raped in public and a: the police couldn't get to her in time because they had no metro-cards, and b: the toll both guy just watched.

    in other words, DRIVE
  • I looked at the map and F to G seems like the only subway option....or driving....but do you know how long either would take during rush hour?
  • Subject: biking

is always a good option....it's fairly easy to get from PS to LIC via bike....
  • I don't like to ride in traffic and would probably need to wear a suit, so that's really not an option for me.

Hmm...not really. There's no great direct route that'll take you there. I've been trying to figure that one out for years and still haven't found a route that safe, well lit at night, and not too congested.

Plus, winter. I like cycling but not enough to be that miserable.

Unfortunately there isn't a good direct route. Maybe look for a ride share on craigslist since the G train is very slow.
  • I have a car, so I can drive.

I just want to know how long it takes....either by train (F to G) or by car.
  • commute shouldn't take more than 25 minutes. BUT. BQE at rush hour is bumper to bumper, esp. between here and the bridge because of construction. i take the back roads (classen, vanderbilt) down to the BQE, and hop on it down there.
  • Subject: route to LIC

    erika....

there are certainly decent routes to LIC....the way I go, that has always worked is down Vanderbilt (or some similar road, Carlton) to Park Ave (below the BQE) to Bedford Ave...you can them take Bedford through Williamsburg (I usually do not but take Williamsburg street to Rodney which runs under the BQE) ....that will get you to Greenpoint....pass McGinness bvld, take a left on a road after McGinness (newell, diamond, monitor) to get to Greenpoint avenue, then go over the bridge to LIC.... or take mcginess bridge to LIC

not very tough, but you are riding your bike in the city, if you're not into that then it's probably not for you.
  • I used to do it and it sucks. F to the G. The G takes 26 minutes from Smith/9th to the end of the line at teh citigroup building. during rush hour there is a G train only every 7 minutes. with walking tothe train and waiting to change it took me an hour. An alternative is the F to Roc Center and change to the V but that is longer

Driving take the BQE to Mc Guiness Blvd and go accross the Polaski Bridge but there isn't much parking there either
  • Thanks, Jack. That's useful info.
  • i've been taking the F & G route from 15th St (So Slope) to LIC. it takes me an hour door to door. it's true that the G only runs every 6 minutes or so, but you get the timing down pretty quickly. if i walk out of my house on windsor place at 8 AM sharp, i am walking into work on thomson ave at a couple minutes before 9. the thing i like best about the G: i get on at Smith/9th (first stop of the line) and ALWAYS get a seat; i get on at court square (last stop of the line) and ALWAYS get a seat. i ride during rush hour both ways. warning: it's a lousy way to travel on the weekends since various trains don't run regularly out there.

i like it. i get to read a lot on the train, which i honestly enjoy.
